Leon C. Fletcher

1921 - 2015

Former resident of Monterey and Ben Lomond, Fletcher was an Emeritus Professor of Speech at Monterey Peninsula College; during his 32 year career in education he taught speech, English and radio and television production; author of 18 books, more than 800 articles, and online mentor for aspiring writers. His textbook, How to Design & Deliver Speeches, is used in hundreds of colleges and universities. The mass-market edition, How to Speak Like a Pro, was a major best seller.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Daly City, he earned degrees at San Jose State University, and University of Southern California.
During World War II he served in the South Pacific making 17 combat landings. He had to abandon ship 3 times due to Japanese attacks. During the Korean Conflict he served aboard the USS Missouri as a communications officer for combat ships in the Pacific. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was awarded 5 personal commendations.
He was an avid sailor, world traveler, and amateur radio operator who helped with emergency communications following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years Vivian, their 2 daughters, Nancy Rouppet of Lodi, CA and Lorie (Steven) Ybarrola of Lexington, KY; and 3 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.
