Robert "Bob" Wetzel Obituary

Robert departed peacefully from his earthly home in Lodi, at the age of 93, on January 27, 2024, ready to embark on his next career.
He was the oldest of 3 sons born to Andrew and Rose Wetzel in McKees Rocks, PA. Bob grew up in that area, often times referred to as "the bottoms", and at that young age of 17, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, ready to see more of the world and experience new adventures.
His naval training as an electrician saw him engaged in Mine Warfare aboard several mine sweeping ships during the Korean Conflict. His naval career lasted 10 years. After retiring from the Navy, law enforcement became his next career.
He spent 1 year as a Correctional Officer for the California State of Corrections, and in 1960 Lodi Police Department hired Bob starting as a patrolman. For the next 20 years his work and schooling for advancement saw him progress thru the ranks of the department and retiring as "Lieutenant Wetzel".
That retirement didn't last long. For the next 20 years Bob would work part time as a Deputy Marshal for the Stockton Judicial District and later the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department in Court Services. His total law enforcement career spanned 40+ years. He was truly a "people person", and his entire working life was service oriented. He loved helping people.
Bob had a strong personality; a distinct voice; a "get it done" work ethic and an opinion on most everything. Those who met him would probably remember him by any one, or all of the above. He really was "One of a Kind".
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Rose Wetzel; brothers, Ronald and Lawrence; Father and Mother in-law, Floyd and Doris Weisenhaus and niece Tina Weisenhaus. He is survived by the love of his life, his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Ila Mae; sons David and Robert (Mike) and wife Rhonda Wetzel; step son Kevin and wife Linda Elliott; sister's in law JoAnne and Jeanette Wetzel; brother in-law Wm. (Bill) and wife Nancy Weisenhaus; 6 Grandchildren and several great-Grandchildren, nieces and nephews; his very special friends, Mike and Sandi Pyle, and not to be forgotten, his feline fur-baby Ben.
Per Bob's wishes there were no services. A military burial will be at a later date.
A special "Thank You" to Hospice of San Joaquin - Nurses Sasha and Elizabeth; Caregiver Nora and Social Worker Josh. Also California Caregivers, DeLois and LeAnna.

Bob and my Dad Bob Hooper were lifelong friends. I believe it was Bob who told Dad Lodi was hiring officers. They served together at LPD until Dad joined CHP to finish out his career. When Dad was dying Bob came in and sat with him and when he passed Bob came to funeral. He was indeed a strong personality. I hope you continue to have wonderful moments smiling at his memory.

Im so sorry for the loss of your great father. Back in 2012 Bob was kind enough to make a last visit with my Dad, Bob Hooper. They served together on Lodi PD and I'm certain they're creating a ruckus in Heaven. Haha.

Bob was a good friend of my father. (Arch McVay). I remember many times when he was on duty, dropping by to our house for coffee and to visit with my dad. I was probably 8/10 years old at the time, and even then, remember him speaking so highly of his "Ila Mae." He had a "bigger than life" presence with his very strong voice. When my dad died at the young age of 54, Bob was one of the very first people to visit my mother, offering any help she may have needed. I always appreciated him reaching out to her. To the entire Wetzel family, I send my deepest condolences to you. He was a great and kind man. <3 Chris

Bob was a good man. Always had my back when I started my law enforcement career with Lodi PD. Little rough around the edges but had a good heart. My prayers for the family.

Sending my sympathy to the Wetzel family. Bob was unique, interesting , a hard worker with a lot of enthusiasm and, a good sense of humor. I worked with him at both the Marshalls & the Sheriff´s departments for many years. Yes, he was "one of a kind." I remember he liked cats and treated everyone equally. He was a good caring man. Bob spoke of Ila Mae many times and it was obvious he loved her dearly and was so proud of her. Bob, may you rest in peace . Cheryl wisenor

We would like to extend our condolences to the Wetzel family. 30 years ago we moved into our home, we became Bob's neighbor. That is when we met Bob. Always the curious type, and a character as many have known him to be. His career in law enforcement was something he was very proud of. Always had a good story to share whether or not you had the time. Lovingly, I ended up nick naming him "THE MAYOR OF LAKEHOME DRIVE", if you live on Lakehome you would know what I mean. He will be missed.
