ANITA McCARTHY Obituary
Dr. Anita Marie McCarthy, 59 year old resident of Tappan, NY died October 29, 2008 at home after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Woodside, NY to Dr. John J. McCarthy and Mary (Brannon) McCarthy. A highly respected educator for 35 years, Anita retired in 2006 from East Ramapo Central School District where she served as Principal of Grandview Elementary and Hillcrest Intermediate Schools. Prior to that she served as Principal of Todd Elementary School in Briarcliff Manor and as an administrator and teacher in Brewster and Hyde Park School Districts. The educational community recognized and valued her commitment to all children and their families. Anita served as deacon in the Germonds Presbyterian Church in New City, volunteered at the Rockland Food Pantry, and supported Habitat for Humanity. Anita is predeceased by her husband, Dr. David Lee Rightmyer, and her brother in law, Eugene Bassett. She is survived by her children, Kathryn Greer "Kate" Rightmyer, 20, and Charles David Rightmyer, 18. She is survived by her siblings John (Eileen) McCarthy of Whitestone, NY, Maureen Bassett of Blue Point,NY, Donald (Mary Anne) McCarthy of Westminster, CO, Jean Anne McCarthy of Washingtonville, PA, Christopher McCarthy of Anaheim, CA, and Eileen (Steve) Jaszczuk of Frederickburg, VA. She is survived by her husband's brothers and sisters Charles (Jenny) Rightmyer of San Diego, CA, Rachael Rightmyer Baldhoff of Cincinnati, OH, Joseph (June) Rightmyer of Austin, TX, James (Elizabeth) Rightmyer of Louisville, KY, Mardee Rightmyer (Julie Green) of Dacatur, GA, Julie Knowlton of Athens, GA, Kay (Dennis) Cementina of San Louis Obispo, CA, Doris (Tom) Granum of Athens, GA, and Peter (Melanie) Rightmyer of Hume, VA. Anita would like to thank United Hospice of Rockland, especially Mary Alice Barna, R.N. She would like to thank her dear friends of Germonds Presbyterian Church for their generous caring ministry. Anita would like to thank her many close friends, most importantly George and Mary Anne Drew Evans for their constant daily love and support. Visitation will be held at Higgins Funeral Home in New City Friday, October 31, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, November 1 at Germonds Presbyterian Church in New City with burial to follow in church cemetery.
