DAVID BLOCH Obituary
David Ludwig Bloch, 92, of Mt. Vernon, NY, died Monday, September 16, 2002 at his son's home in Barrytown, NY. Mr. Bloch was well known throughout the world for his artwork, as well as being a prominent member of the deaf community. He was the beloved father of Lydia Abel of Nurnberg, Germany, Daniel Louis, musician, in Mt. Vernon, NY and Dean Lewis, physician of Barrytown, NY. He was Opa of Rainer Abel, physician, in Dusseldorf, Germany, Simon, Sidney, Solomon and Sadie of Barrytown. He also leaves behind two daughters-in-law Dawn and Gale. Mr. Bloch was born in Floss, Germany on March 25, 1910, the son of Simon and Selma Ansbacher Bloch. Deaf at birth, he was orphaned by the age of one. An accomplished artist whose work is exhibited worldwide, he was trained as a lithographer. Captured by the Nazis and sent to the Dachau concentration camp, he was miraculously released with the help of an American cousin. Mr. Bloch then booked passage to Shanghai, China where he lived from 1940-1949. During this time, he painted many beautiful watercolors and produced an outstanding collection of woodcuts. These works depicted life in China during World War II and the Japanese Occupation of China. Mr. Bloch married Lily Cheng, who was also deaf. After the war they moved to Mount Vernon where they had two sons. He worked for 27 years at Commercial Decal. During his employment there he painted the chinaware of President Lyndon Johnson's administration. During the 1970's, Mr. Bloch produced a series of paintings depicting the horrors of his personal experiences in Dachau. These works have been displayed in numerous museums worldwide and they are on permanent exhibit at Dachau. His last work, completed in 2001, is appropriately titled "The Fountain of Youth". Memorial services for Mr. Bloch will be held at 11 am on Sunday, September 22, 2002 at the family home in Barrytown.
