DAVID HOBBS Obituary

David Butler Hobbs, 84 years old, native of Rockland County and WW II Veteran was buried today with full Military Honors in Tappan, NY. A Mass was held at his home, where he passed away on March 31, 2006. Born in Haverstraw to Edward and Catherine Butler Hobbs, he had four brothers and one sister. His surviving brother is Edward (Ned). His early education was at St. Claire's School, Hastings-onHudson, which was a boarding school. Secondary education was at Haverstraw High School, where he participated with his brothers in their athletic program. His nickname "The Phantom" came from his prowess in hockey. He also played semi-pro football. Dave attended the University of South Dakota under the A.S.T.P. where he studied engineering. He obtained his B.S. Degree from Manhattan College, Magna Cum Laude and MA from Columbia University. Dave was in the 82nd Airborne Division followed by the A.S.T.P. and then the 97th Infantry Division. He was a much decorated veteran of both the European and the Asian Theatres of Operation, while attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He married his wife of 61 years, Helen Mack at Our Lady of the Sacred Church in Tappan. David is survived by her and three sons; David, Brad and Kevin, two caring daughters-inlaw; Patricia (Brad) and Carleen (Kevin). The joys of his life were his grandchildren; Sean, Brian, Erin and Kaitlyn. They gave him great pleasure. He devoted over 22 years to CYO, Little League and Babe Ruth League. Dave was inducted into the Babe Ruth Hall of Fame after his volunteer work with the youth of Clarkstown. He retired from American Cyanamid, Lederle Division after 35 years as a safety engineer.
