James Johnson Obituary

Dr. James F. Johnson

Chappaqua - Dr. James F. Johnson, a longtime White Plains pediatrician, died Wednesday at his home in Chappaqua. He was 97 and had lived in Chappaqua since 1968. Dr. Johnson left a thriving private practice in Binghamton to work in public health in the Bronx. In 1970, he joined a group practice in White Plains, retiring in 1997.

Gregarious and funny, he enjoyed Bible and Torah study, handball at the White Plains YMCA, plays, movies, theater, pies, orange sherbet and butter pecan ice cream. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the Army as a private at Indiana University in 1942 and left as a captain in 1948.

His wife, Stella, died in 2006. He is survived by three daughters, Niki, Margaret and Kate; a son, Peter; eight grandchildren and two great grandsons.

Dr. Johnson saved my life more than once; I managed to have more terrible illnesses before I was 8 and Dr Johnson was always there. He made house calls & more than once I´d have raging fever and there he was reminding my 5 siblings what they had to do to help me get better. I´m 76 now but some things in life you don´t forget. Dr Johnson was a Godsend and I owe him my life. Although late, please accept my deepest sympathies. Beverly (Huften) Ward

Thinking of Dr. Johnson. His empathy and kindness with his patients was greatly appreciated. And he had a very comforting sense of humor. Prayers

Dr. Johnson, thank you for your empathic care during my childhood. I can hear you typing out my prescription on that reliable typewriter of yours. Rest in peace, you were a very kind and caring doc, thank you.

My prayers are with Nikki, Margaret, Kate and Peter and their families at this time of sadness. Jim was one of my first teachers and role models in pediatrics. Over the past 6 decades, he became a friend and a guide. I learnt only yesterday that he is no more and am deeply saddened. Balu

I was so sorry to read that Dr. Johnson has died. My late father, Dr. Morris Goodman, was a pediatric colleague of his in Binghamton. Peter and I were classmates (and fellow French Horn players) at Alexander Hamilton elementary school and West Junior High School. Dr. Johnson was a kind man and a well-respected physician.

We will really miss him! His wit and wisdom, sage counsel and advice, seeing him at family gatherings what a loss. He promised 125 years and almost made it :). Our deepest sympathy to our Johnson cousins, from the family of Margaret Johnson (Jims sister) & Calvin Friar: Bill Plikaitis, Julie Friar, Margaret Friar-Plikaitis, Luke Plikaitis.

We have very fond memories of Dr. Johnson. He was so calm and reassuring to us when we had our first child. He practiced such common sense medicine. I am thankful that we benefited from his kind, gentle manner and excellent care. Rest In Peace Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson was my pediatrician. I'm now 46, and haven't seen him, since I was about 18. I remember him being a very nice, kind man. He always gave me a lollipop, to help appease me, after receiving an injection. I'm happy that Dr. Johnson lived a long, and prosperous life. I'm sure he did much good, for so many. My condolences to his family, friends, and acquaintances. May he rest in peace. God bless...

We are heartbroken to hear of the loss of our dear Cousin Jim. He was always so kind to us and generous with his time and affection when it came to attending our family celebrations in Binghamton. We will miss him terribly. Please include us in any celebrations of his life you may have in the future.
