Joseph Notaro Obituary

Joseph Notaro

Mamaroneck - Joseph A. Notaro, Jr. born February 15, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, to loving parents Joseph Notaro and Mary (Magro) Notaro, died on December 22, 2019. Joseph grew up in Brooklyn and Harlem surrounded by a large, close-knit Italian family. He graduated from Iona College in 1956 and from New York Law School in 1960. Joseph is survived by the love of his life Phyllis (Nicolosi) Notaro to whom was married for 60 years. Joseph is also survived by his children, Mary, Joseph and Michael, their spouses Andrew, Bettie and Kerri, and his three grandchildren, Emma, Joseph and Grace all of whom were his endless source of pride and joy.

Joseph was a well-respected criminal defense attorney practicing in New York City and Westchester. He was passionate about his work and helped many people as a trusted counselor and advisor. Joe served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Dix and Fort Bragg. He was a beloved member of the Mamaroneck community and served as Village Attorney.

Joseph was a loyal friend and had the great fortune to have forged many life-long friendships. Among his many wonderful attributes were his insatiable intellectual curiosity, his love of reading, his sense of humor and quick-wit. He shared his passion of music with his family and made sure that his grandchildren had an appreciation for the artists and bands from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Joe was also an avid fisherman, golfer, and Giants fan, and always appreciated a nice scotch whiskey.

We here at Mamaroneck Public Library appreciated Joe so much, as an avid reader, life-long learner and enthusiastic, active and vital supporter of his community library. Joe put his money where his mouth was, and never stopped using, supporting and extolling the virtues of his community library.

We are all better for having Joe Notaro in our lives, and he will be missed.

We are more than happy to be hosting his service, at the sacred site where communities come together to celebrate education, learning, curiosity, and, ultimately, each other.

My first coach. I was on the Packers, 1974, 8 years old, Pop Warner football at Harbor island. He was a nice and gentle man, never forget him. Every time he told my Dad about something good I did in practice I'd make him repeat it all night until I went to bed. "Hey Dad, tell me what Mr. Notaro said again" haha. RIP

I am David, Joey's brother in law. Joseph and Phyllis welcomed me, my wife and my children to their home one year many years ago while we were visiting New York City. We traveled from the Catoctin mountains of Maryland and spent the evening with them . Phyllis prepared an outstanding meal and entertained our children as did Joseph who played an acoustic instrument for them. He was an influence as 2 of our children graduated college with music degrees. We spent a few other times with them as they visited our dad and family during reunions in Wintergreen Resort in Virginia. I always had great admiration and respect for Mr. Notaro while only having the pleasure of his company for a few different times. I know his family will miss him very much and I am teary eyed at that thought bringing back memories of my dad who passed only a few years ago.
My love goes out to the entire Notaro family.
