Nicholas D'Eri Obituary

D'Eri, Nicholas

Nicholas Robert D'Eri

November 23, 1924-January 1, 2016

Nicholas Robert D'Eri, passed away peacefully, January 1, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his 7 daughters: Catherine Colt (Douglas), Patricia Whiting (Lawrence), Mary Lynn D'Eri (Keith), Jeanne Donley (Matthew), Ann Jordan (Stephen), Francesca Behn (George), Christine Hirsch (Stephen) and his devoted son, Anthony. He is also survived by his loving sister, Nancy D'Eri, 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and long time family friends.

He is predeceased by the love of his life, Rosemary (2003) and his precious angel, Niki Mary (1974) as well as his parents and two sisters.

Nicholas was born in Jersey City, NJ on November 23, 1924 to Pier Luigi D'Eri and Carmela (Parziale). He was one of four children.

Nicholas grew up in the Bronx and graduated Valedictorian of his class at

Samuel Gompers Vocational High School in June 1942. He was a decorated veteran of the United States Navy having served in both World War II and the Korean Wars. He was a radio operator and electrician on the USS Mattaponi. After the service, Nicholas went to work for New York Telephone Company as a repairman, where, while on strike he met and fell in love on the picket line with Rosemary. They married in October of 1948 and were married for 55 years prior to Rosemary's passing. Nicholas moved to Haverstraw in 1966 with his family and made it his home until his passing.

He worked for the telephone company for over 40 years. Upon retirement he went to work as a bus driver for Haverstraw Transit and drove for them until 2004.

Nicholas was family patriarch, role model and hero to his family. He was a quiet, gentle man who taught by love and example. His family and friends always came first as was evident by the love and care they bestowed on him throughout his life. His passing has left a hole in our hearts and shoes too big to fill. To say he will be missed is an understatement. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion and unwavering strength.

Visiting hours will be at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home 133 Broadway Haverstraw NY, on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9, a mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's RC Church 115 Broadway Haverstraw NY, Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11:15am, interment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Haverstraw NY.
