TOM GILL Obituary

GILL, TOM Tom Gill, 92, Prolific Lone Ranger Cartoonist Tom Gill, who drew "The Lone Ranger" comic books, died on October 17, at his home in Croton, NY, he was 92. During his career, he drew "The Lone Ranger" comic books for 20 years along with the "Hi-Yo Silver" and "Bonanza" comic books. He taught Cartooning and Children's Book Illustration in New York area colleges, including the School of Visual Arts, which titled him "Teacher for Life". At SVA, he was on the initial faculty as Department Chair in 1948 and later Alumni Director in 1969. Starting on the Daily News in 1933, he was credited with drawing the maps which broke the news of the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor. Later, he created "Flower Potts", a comic strip about a cab driver, for The New York Herald Tribune, after which he staffed on The New York Times in the early 60's. His work brought him recognition from The National Cartoonists Society, SVA & USO. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, a daughter Nancy Zaglauer, a son, Tom, four grandchildren, Lisa Myus, Braithe Gill, David and Laura Zaglauer and three great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Name of Mary, Croton-on-Hudson, Friday, October 21 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Holy Name of Mary building fund.
