William Macomber Obituary

Macomber, William A.

William A. Macomber, age 91, a lifelong resident of Brewster, NY, died Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT.

Bill was born on July 7, 1925 in Webster, MA to Harry and Minnie (McNay) Macomber. He graduated from Brewster High School in 1943. Bill proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a tail gunner in a B-24, having flown 36 missions and was the proud recipient of a purple heart and 6 bronze battle stars. Years later Bill was very proud to attend several squadron reunions.

On August 17, 1946 Bill married the love of his life, Carol Ekstrom at the First United Methodist Church of Brewster.

Bill was Owner and Operator of Bill's Refrigeration in Brewster, NY since 1949. Bill retired in 1993 but could be found assisting his son Carl with the business for many years to come. Not too long after establishing his Refrigeration business, Bill partnered with his lifelong friends, Francis and Richard Palmer to form Palmer-Macomber Fuel Oil Co. in Brewster. These gentlemen and their families remain close friends to this day.

Through the years, Bill was a member of the BPO Elks #2101 in Brewster and the Brewster VFW Post 672. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brewster. Bill was an avid Giants fan along with keeping close watch over the UCONN Women's Basketball. He also enjoyed golf and bowling. Every Sunday Bill would enjoy drives with his entire family, an opportunity to be together.

Besides his wife Carol of 70 years, Bill is survived by his four children, Dawn Macomber and Star Auer, both of Danbury, CT, Carl E. Macomber (Fran) of Brewster, NY and Kyle D. Macomber (Lori) of New Fairfield, CT. Sisters-in-law Patricia Doyle of Brewster, NY and Eloise Reinhardt (Joseph) of Carmel, NY. Nine grandchildren, Douglas Macomber, Candice Boyle, Kelly Scofield, Kristi Upton, Chad Auer, Brittany Macomber, Carl Macomber Jr., Kathryn Macomber and Kyle Macomber Jr.; Nine great grandchildren, Xander, Mackenzie, Elizabeth, Joshua, Mary Kate, Julia, Matthew, Molly and Autumn. Bill was pre-deceased by his son Jon Macomber in 2010, his son William A. Macomber Jr. in 2016 and his son-in-law Timothy Auer in 2017.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 11AM at the First United Methodist Church of Brewster, 83 Main Street, Brewster, NY. A private cremation will follow.
