Hello Jan. I'm not sure if you remember me but i wanted to reach out and share both condolences and a couple of quick thoughts about your man. Like Greg Hutson and many others, Jim was a major factor of our development as correctional workers but also "people of earth". He and I used to have lots of
interesting discussions about nothing and yet everything. He had farmer finese. Always pretended to be a little behind but always snapped with wit and insight. Like Greg, my post orders always included the coffee pot detail. And I also remember you and the handsome couple you two were when you first met.
I'm bummed that time has spread all of our friends and acquaintances apart. In this rodeo we spend a lifes worth of meeting folks. Some notable and worth remembering as both you and Jim were.
God bless you. Take a breath. And know that there's folks out in this wilderness who have fond thoughts of you both. Ken Kaz

Dear Jan, recently learned of Jim’s passing, a heartbreaker for those of us who knew and worked with him. Wish you and the family all the best during this difficult time.
Ask anyone who worked at USP Lompoc who their favorite Lieutenant was, most would say “Cooksey”. Me too. Jim was my mentor when I made LT, he influenced my growth as a supervisor more than anyone else and taught me the importance of picking which battles to fight. Another things he taught me was junior lieutenants were responsible for keeping the 30 cup coffee pot at the ready and more importantly how to prepare “nuclear grade coffee” in substantial quantities.
A true professional, Jim was loved by his officers, I was in awe of the respect they had for him. Rest in Peace sir.

Jan and your family, Caroline and I are so very sorry for your loss of Jim. I have such great memories of Jim as a mentor and friend he was one of a kind, a great man. We feel thankful to be able to visit with you both last December.
