Samuel Campbell "Sam" Legard

Samuel Campbell Legard, Jr., 93, of Berryville, Virginia passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Viva Assisted Living in Berryville.

Sam was born December 21, 1931 in Leesburg, Virginia, the son of the late Samuel "S.C." Legard, Sr. and Edith Clara Potts Legard.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950. He grew up on a farm in the Hillsboro area of Loudoun County and was very active in 4-H. He continued to support the Young Farmers Associations and the 4-H Clubs throughout the years.

He was drafted into the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Sam was most known as an insurance agent. He started with Virginia Farm Bureau. In 1970, he left and started his own agency - Legard Insurance Agency in Leesburg. He was a member of the Hamilton Ruritan Club since 1958.

He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Berryville but attended Berryville Baptist Church with his wife, Marggie. He had a passion for flying since 1952 and was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association for over 70 years. He coordinated this passion of flying with taking aerial photographs and documented the growth of Loudoun County and surrounding areas.

He married Margaret Alice Shackleford Legard on October 24, 1987 in Winchester, Virginia.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Michael Legard of Tennessee and Allan Legard (Nancy) of Tennessee; a sister, Ann Mayrand (Curt) of Ohio. He was affectionately known as "Pops" and loved by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 A. M. Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville with Rev. Tyler Phillips officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 P. M. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Viva Assisted Care for their loving care of Sam during his three-year stay there.

We will always remember Sam for the pens that he gave saying BE KIND, ENJOY LIFE, and SMILE. That is a life motto that we should all live by.
