Lucylle Leatrice (Lund) Dubbert of Basye and
Falls Church, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026 at the age of 93.
Born in 1932, in
Emmetsburg, Iowa, Lucylle attended Havelock High School and received her teaching degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Despite losing her mother when she was five years old and losing her father when she was a teenager, she was resilient and positive.
Lucylle was a dedicated and loving teacher. Over her 40 years as an educator and administrator, she graced the lives of thousands of children. She always said that there are no "bad children", only children that are misunderstood.
She married the love of her life, Dr. William (Bill) Dubbert in 1952. The couples' original wedding date of March 22 brought a paralyzing Iowa blizzard that forced the nuptials to be postponed until the next day. They were married for 74 years.
Four months after they married, they began service at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Bill became a member of the Army Veterinary Corp and Lucylle, at the age 19, was promoted to the Director of the Post nursery. After Bill left the Army, Lucy helped him in his work at a busy veterinary practice in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She scheduled appointments and communicated with Bill in the field via short wave radio.
The Dubberts, now with a son, Brent and a daughter, Billinda. moved to
Falls Church, Virginia in 1967, when Bill joined the Department of Agriculture in Regulatory Veterinary Medicine. Lucy taught at Annandale United Methodist Preschool for three years and then for 24 years at Valleybrook School in Falls Church.
Lucylle loved cats, baking, paper dolls, writing poetry, music boxes and being with her family. The mail service was always busy with Lucy's many notes and letters written to family, friends and people needing support. Her trademark was a carefully selected sticker on the back of the envelope.
As NaNa to her grandchildren, Lucylle used her imagination and passion for teaching to make visits to NaNa and Papa's house magical. As the grandchildren grew, she and Bill stayed engaged in the details of their lives and were the most enthusiastic cheerleaders, theatre patrons, academic success celebrants and most encouraging sports fans. Nana was intentional about being present for every Halloween parade, Homecoming, school award, and birthday celebration. Each Christmas was better than the last, and Nana's and Papa's Christmas' most certainly put Santa to shame.
Lucylle is survived by her beloved husband, Bill, her half-sister, Cleo, her son, Brent, a daughter, Billinda, son-in-law Jim, grandchildren Alec (Cassie), Alison (August), Abby, Austin, great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Coleman, and 7 nieces.
