Mike was born in Huntsville Alabama. We moved up to Gaithersburg Maryland when I was 5 so he was 8 1/2.

News of Michael's death was a blow to us, unexpected and almost paralyzing. We learned only yesterday, from Sonny's voicemail, that Michael is no more with us here. However, he certainly lives on in our memories as part of our lives and the lives of our two sons. We, being a military family, left Gaithersburg for a while, and when we returned, Michael was grown up and no longer there. But we did keep in touch with his parents, who are among our dearest friends, and heard bits and pieces of how Mike was faring. We knew how he loved his chosen profession and saw the honors he won; and Kaye and Sonny shared the bad news when cancer was diagnosed. We added his name to those we daily remember in our prayers, and it will stay there. We understand how difficult this is for Kaye, Sonny, Judy and Jed and all their families, and comfort will come in the Almighty's time. In the meantime, we share the burden of grief and know that, somehow, Michael knows how much we love him.

Mike, We were brothers in Rookie School. I will miss you, but I will always remember you as a friend, comedian, and Virginia Beach Fireman.

If living a full life is about caring for others, Mike was the epitome of such a life. I had always admired him but even more so when he found out he had cancer because of the way he CHOSE to view it. Positive, greatful, humble and thankful for the awesome life he had been allowed to have. I could only hope to have the same outlook when the good Lord comes for me!

I am so sad to learn of Michael's passing. I knew Mike as a brother firefighter in Va. Beach. Today, the world is a little less bright, and my thoughts are with his family. Rest in peace, my friend.

Michael, You are without a doubt one of the funniest, most caring people I have ever met in my life. I was sad to see you leave VBFD and move away but that is where your heart taking you. I wish I could be there today to share with your family. I offer my prayers to them and knowing that you are already telling jokes and making the whole group in heaven have better time brings a smile to my face. Until we meet again my friend. Shalom!!

Captain Kreitman was anything but kind to me. And as a member of the minority, that comes rarely. I have never met anyone so genuinely friendly working in an environment that can easily turn a person bitter and resentful. He may be gone from the physical world, but he had left a legacy of fearlessness in one of the jobs that requires it the most.
