Ray Powers Obituary

Powers, Ray,

87, of Valley Station, Kentucky passed away on May 9, 2017. Ray was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on November 5, 1929 to the late Howard and Nettie Powers. He purchased a farm in Valley Station in the 1950s. He subsequently developed a large portion of that farm into one of the early subdivisions in the area. After a number of years in residential development, Ray and a partner established a commercial general contracting company that built many successful projects in Louisville and throughout the Southeast. He continued working in his later years alongside his son, Mark, as general contractors in concrete construction.

Beyond Ray's devotion to his family, his true passion was horses. He was a past member of the American Quarter Horse Association and National Cutting Horse Association and the first Quarter Horse Racing Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 63 years, Mary Lucile (Breckenridge) Powers; two sons David Powers (Amy) and Mark Powers (Sally); five grandchildren, Justin (Justina), Travis (Nicki), Megan, Morley and Breck; five great-grandchildren, Sam, Stella, Lillian, Rory and James; one sister, Nita Byrum (Bob); one niece, Robin and one nephew, Skip.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, May 15, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville Chapel (10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40272). Visitation from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Burial at Bethany Memorial Cemetery will follow services.

My heart is very sad to learn that Ray is gone. What an amazing man. Larger than life itself and very charismatic. I have a lot of memories of he and his beautiful wife, Mary. But what stands out more to me is the friendship and bond he shared with my daddy, Billy Otto. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that my dad loved Ray.
Ray was kind enough to speak at my dad's funeral. To this day, the story that Ray told about one of many trail rides they were on together is the one story that is still talked about by everyone in attendance that day. Not only was it a great story, but it was the eloquent way in which Ray spoke that made it so memorable.
Mr. Powers, you will be greatly missed... when you get to heaven, please tell my dad that I love him. He'll be the one standing near all the horses!

Mark, I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. You and your family are in my prayers . May God be with you during your time of sorrow, I know how hard it is. Your dad was always such a funny man to be around, we always enjoyed his stories he told when we would all be at the liquor store. I still have my hat he gave me years ago, and Alix said he still remembers when he came to career day at school. Please let your mom know we are thinking of her.

I was so sad to hear about Ray and my heart breaks for you. I have so many wonderful memories of you all and I am very grateful that you were and are still in my life.
May God hold and guard your hearts during this difficult time and thank you Mark for always being there for me. I love you friend and hate that I can't be there right now. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Love,
