Louis Roux Obituary

Louis E. Roux
bicyclist in Tewksbury Center; 81
TEWKSBURY Louis E. Roux, age 81, known to many as "Uncle Louie", died Thursday evening, August 27, at the Sunbridge-Glenwwood Nursing Center in Lowell, following a year long period of declining health.
He was born in Tewksbury on Dec. 14, 1927, a special son of the late Phaida "Joe" and Maria (LeMay) Roux. Born with a palsy condition in his back and legs, he underwent a cost-free operation at the Shriner's Hospital in Springfield which enabled him to walk for most of his life
although assisted by a cane. He
became a familiar sight in Tewksbury Center as he used a bicycle for most of his life to travel. He was such a prolific pedaler, he wore his "Schwinn" bicycles out every two years. He was a fixture at the former Hillson's Bicycle Shop in Tewksbury Center, and became an expert at aligning spoke bicycle wheels, where his "pay" was companionship, comradery and an occasional beer. He also made a daily pilgrimage to the former Snack Shack restaurant on Main Street. He lived into adulthood with his mother, enjoyed 16 of his middle years with his sister Gloria's family, and for the past 26 years with his brother Victor's family. He had traded his bicycle for a wheelchair for the last two decades of his life and until last year could be found smiling and waiving at anyone and everyone who passed through the center of town.
He is survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, Victor and Anne (Dillon) Roux, with whom he resided, and
Eugene L. Roux; his sisters and brother-in-law, Gloria A. Deputat and her husband, Walter, and Elaine Stephens, all of Tewksbury Center; and many nieces and
nephews.
ROUX of Tewksbury, Aug. 27, Louis E. Roux, age 81. Relatives and friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, September 1, in the Tewksbury Funeral Home,
corner of Dewey and Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, phone (800 in MA or 978) 851-2950. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated
Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in St. William's Church, 1351 Main St. (Rte. 38), Tewksbury. Burial will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396 (www.shrinershq.org) will be appreciated. www.tewksburyfuneralhome.com

We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Roux & Deputat families. We grew up in Tewksbury & have fond memories of Louie. He always had a friendly greeting & a great big smile every time he would cross your path. He will be truly missed. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Sincerely,

As Tewksbury residents from 1937 to 2000, My sister Joan and I, of course, saw Louie most of our lives, either walking or biking around town. He is a major memory of our childhood.. Hopefully, he is now in a place where he is free of affliction and surrounded by loved ones who have gone on before. Joan and I have lived in Scarborough, Maine since the year 2000.

We didn't know 'Uncle Louie', but my husband and I were wondering why we hadn't seen him around this past season. We always loved to give him a big wave and a beep as we drove by. His smile and wave spread joy to people passing by. What a pleasant man. May he rest in peace.
