Pauline Sparages Obituary

CHELMSFORD – Pauline "Toula" Sparages, 82, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away after a brief illness at Mass General Hospital on January 6, 2020, with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Arthur A. Sparages. She was born in Boston, MA on April 17, 1937 and was a daughter of the late Angelo and Polita (Vombirogianis) Tsilikounas originally from Greece. Toula graduated Cum Laude in 1977, from UMass Lowell where she earned her degree in Music. She worked as the Andover Elementary Music Teacher for 20 years. Her 5th and 6th grade chorus made All-State in 1996 and she considered that one of the highlights of her teaching career. Toula was also the assistant choir director, assistant organist and an active Philoptochos member at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. She had a very active Youth Choir who had the opportunity to sing an entire Hierarchal Divine Liturgy a cappella with His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios at the Transfiguration Church. Upon her retirement, Toula continued teaching music one day a week at the Hellenic American Academy in Lowell for four years. She continued to share her passion and love for music during children retreats, church camps and various workshops for the Metropolis. She was blessed to be married to a wonderful tenor who shared her love of church music and was always by her side. They met at a choir conference in New Haven, CT in May 1954 and sang together in church choirs ever since. Toula's greatest legacy will always be the memory of her dedication to her family. Toula is survived by her loving husband, Arthur A. Sparages and her three loving children: Joanne and her husband Eduardo Leon of Clarence, NY; Ernie and his wife Christine Sparages of Carlisle, PA and Evan and his wife Denise of Marlborough, MA; and nine grandchildren: Nicolas, Vanessa, Sofia Leon; Ariana, Stephanie, Jordan Sparages and Ana, Jacob and Lucas Sparages, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Nick Tsilikounas.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Friday, January 10 at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Fr. John Sarantos Way, Lowell, MA followed by her Funeral Service beginning at 11 o'clock. Interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery, CHELMSFORD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. For online condolences visit CHELMSFORDFUNERALHOME.COM and find us on Facebook.

Offering our prayers to your family as the Toula's one year memorial approaches. Such wonderful memories with her that we'll cherish always. So glad she got a chance to meet our children and teach them songs like she used to teach me! May God continue granting rest to her soul and bringing those she left behind his peace. Everlasting be her memory!

Mrs. Sparages was such an important part of my youth and I will be forever grateful for her loving and warm presence in my life during those years. I learned so much from her. She had such an impact on her community and truly lived her faith by example. My sincerest sympathies and condolences to her family.

Mrs. Sparages was my music teacher at the Hellenic American School and also taught me music at Vacation Church Camp at the Transfiguration church. I attribute my passion and love for music to her and especially my love for Jesus and I remember clearly all of the songs that she had written and shared with us children at vacation camp and at the Greek school. I developed a love for song writing, songs about faith and love for God. She remembered every one of her students and any time I saw her at festivals and when I happened to go to church on a Sunday she would be there to say hello. I hope she will be remembered through the music and songs she taught us, especially the christian ones she wrote herself, and I hope her songs can be produced and passed down to future generations. May you rest in the Father's arms in heaven Toula. You were and are a role model for me.

Toula was a wonderful friend and neighbor for years. She was always there for you, always willing to help in any way she could. She was the true meaning of being a Christian. She'll be sadly missed by many. Love, Karen Flynn McCabe

Dear Arthur and Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I'm writing this. We've known Toula ever since you became members of the Transfiguration Church Family. We've been in the choir, Bible Study, St. Makrina Women's group and have attended social events together.

Toula has always been inspirational and God-centered. I remember talking to her in the hospital before her eyesight had returned, and she was counting her blessings, telling me how blessed she was to have such an amazing family by her side.

May God grant you and your family strength during this difficult time. .

With deepest sympathy,

Joan and George Tsoukalas

We are greatly saddened. It's been such an incredible blessing to have had "YiaYia Toula" as part of our childhood. Youth Choir taught us a love for the Divine Liturgy and I'll always hold the memory of Transfiguration Christmas Concerts close to my heart. As well as her and Arthur's voices from the choir loft during the procession on Holy Thursday. I'm humbled and grateful that they made the trip to Albuquerque for the baptism of our twin girls and that our boys got to sing songs with her in Boston. May God grant rest to her sweet soul and bring peace and comfort to Arthur and her children and grandchildren. Everlasting be her memory ❤
