Peter Cooney Obituary

Dighton

Peter Daniel Cooney, 76, of Dighton, MA, passed away peacefully at home with his family on Monday, January 18, 2021 following a long battle with dementia. He was the husband of June (Richter) Cooney, with whom he celebrated his 54th wedding anniversary last June.

He was born on April 29, 1944 in Tewksbury, the son of the late Bartholomew "Bert" Cooney and Marguerite (Dubuque) Cooney. He grew up in Tewksbury, and attended Keith Academy, and graduated with high honors from Lowell Technological Institute (now UMASS Lowell) in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Upon graduation he began work for General Electric in Pittsfield, MA where he worked in their Plastics Department in the LEXAN Resin Technical Marketing Center as a Design Engineer developing consumer and industrial products for the military, automotive, electronic industries.

He and his family relocated to Dighton, MA where they have lived for 47 years, and he was a communicant of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, North Dighton. He worked as a manufacturing engineer in thermoplastic injection molding for Haskon, Inc. (later Hercules, Inc.) in Taunton and American Tourister in Warren RI. He was employed as a Senior Project Engineer for Hasbro, Inc. in Pawtucket, R.I. for 15 years, retiring in 1999. At Hasbro he founded and developed the Production Engineering Department to work on corrections to toys after release to production. Later he moved on to being responsible for all engineering related to Play-Doh manufacturing, designing, purchasing and installing a pneumatic conveying system for Play-Doh materials. For 21 years he was a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers. He retired from Hasbro Inc. in 1999 where he worked as a Senior Project Engineer. Once retired, he enjoyed gardening, working on cars, and building a garage for his cars.

Besides his wife, June of Dighton, he is survived by his son Peter Thomas Cooney and his wife Regina, and his two grandchildren Peter Matthew and Jeffrey Joseph, his sister Martha (Cooney) Feran and brother Thomas A. Cooney and his wife Susan of Tewksbury, and also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James F. Cooney and his wife Cathy, also of Tewksbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Peter's name may be made to Kindred Hospice at 275 Martine St. Suite 202, Fall River, MA 02723 or Tewksbury Community Pantry, 999 Whipple Rd., Tewksbury, MA 01876.
