Mr. Robert Manfred Abrahamson
of Westford, MA,
former WWII POW

WESTFORD -- Mr. Robert Manfred Abrahamson, of Westford, MA, died peacefully Tuesday morning November 23, 2010 at the Blaire House in Tewksbury, after a lingering illness.

He was happily married to Mrs. Joyce I. (Bellwood) Abrahamson with whom he had celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on October 20, 2010.

Born in Waterford, CT on January 3, 1924, the son of the late Manfred and Caroline (Swanson) Abrahamson. He was a graduate of Chelmsford High School with the class of 1941.

Mr. Abrahamson served with the U.S. Army during WWII. He was captured after a battle in Italy and listed as a Prisoner of War held in Germany. He was liberated in March of 1944, and honorably discharged in December of 1945.

Following his service to his country Mr. Abrahamson continued working for the government as a Letter Carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Westford until his retirement in 1984.

He was a proud member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, V.F.W. Post 662 in Lowell, Combat Infantrymen's Association, a 59 year member the American Legion Post 437 in Westford. Mr. Abrahamson was an avid golfer and 60 year member of the Nabnasset Lake Country Club in Westford.

He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, and as a kind, devoted husband and family man. He often volunteered his time to help veterans and other worthy causes.

Besides his loving wife, Joyce, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Julie Abrahamson of Myrtle Beach, SC; a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Roger Jaillet of Gardner, MA; a sister-in-law, Nell Abrahamson of N. Chelmsford, MA; two cherished grandchildren, Daniel Brennan of Columbia, SC and Marisa Brennan of Myrtle Beach, SC; two nieces, nephews; and several close family friends.

He was the brother of the late Frederick Abrahamson of N. Chelmsford who died in 1990, and the late George Abrahamson of Lowell.

I haven't seen Robert for several years but I remember him as a man of few words and great strength. He was gentle and serious. When he spoke everyone listened.

I know he'll be dearly missed.

It was always a pleasure to see Bob saunder up the parking lot and into the store..I knew he would always have the time and would show genuine concern of my healt, business and golf game..
I'll rememeber him the rest of my life
because it seemed he was here when I needed support and a few laughs.

64 years together...!!! How nice. I'm so sorry you lost a dear friend. The scriptures speak of a time when life with our loves ones will be forever. It speaks of a time when we will see those we lost in death. May this bring comfort to you as we await the promise from our God to come true.
