He was born in Boston on May 4, 1922, the son of the late Thomas and Nora (Kennedy) Hanley. He was raised in the Brighton section of Boston, and graduated from Saint Columkille High School of Brighton in 1940.
Following graduation, Mr. Hanley served in the Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 31, 1953, obtaining the rank of sergeant. He moved to Tewksbury in 1953, where he lived for more than 40 years.
Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as an operator and bus driver for the MBTA in Boston for 30 years.
Mr. Hanley was a communicant of Saint William's Parish in Tewksbury.
He is survived by a son, Joseph T. Hanley and his wife Pamela (Schonberg) Hanley of Leicester; three grandchildren, Alisha E., Paul M. and Elizabeth R. Hanley, all of Leicester; a brother, Edward Hanley of Sanford, Maine. and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves many friends from his former neighborhood in Tewksbury.
Mr. Hanley was also the brother of the late Catherine Barr.
