Carol Ruzic Obituary

Carol W. Ruzic died on Jan. 25, 2025, at age 96 after hitting her head in a fall a few weeks earlier. She was active until the end, curating the Beverly Shores Depot Museum, feeding raccoons and spending time with a huge number of friends and family.

Carol was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Sept. 19, 1928. Her father, Albert Kalsbeek, was an immigrant from Holland and her mother, Ida Grassmader, an immigrant from Germany.

Carol lived the American dream. She graduated from Northwestern with a bachelor's degree in journalism and later got a master's in education. In 1950, Carol and her husband, Neil Ruzic (who died in 2004) moved to Beverly Shores, Indiana, where she taught first and second grade. At one point, Carol was the president of the Town Board and had the distinction of being the longest-abiding resident of the town she loved so much.

In her later years, she worked tirelessly to save the Beverly Shores train station, helping turn it into a museum, gallery and gift shop where she created almost all of the exhibits.

Carol is survived by her son, David Ruzic (Marilyn); and grandsons, Ryan Ruzic (Eileen) and Brandon Ruzic (Maria); step-grandchildren, Gavin Hyde (Jackie), Stacia Carlson (Justin) and Shelby Cain; and seven great-grandchildren, as well as the many people in Beverly Shores who also called her Mom.

She was so great of an animal lover that she even had a Cat-Crossing sign made and installed in front of her house on the lake front. She will be so missed by many – including the raccoons! (They are being relocated to a sanctuary in Ohio).

A Celebration of Life Event will be held at her home March 22, 2025, from 4 to 9 p.m. Donations, instead of flowers, should be directed to the Beverly Shores Depot Museum and Gallery at https://bsdepot.org/make-a-donation/.

Arrangements made with Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton, Indiana. Online condolences may be made to family at www. ee-fh.com.

Yo David, and family, please accept my deepest sympathies on your mom´s passing, she will be missed. I use to house, and pet sit for her, years ago. We also were involved in a lot of other things, in Beverly Shores. Much love, and many prayers.

David, I offer my deepest condolences in the passing of your mom.
My parents Kenneth and Virginia Lange were close friends to your parents.
I, so, enjoyed going with my parents to visit. Your parents were awesome. I remember when you were born. You were a cute little baby.
The picture of your mom looks great and she still looks like I remember her years ago. She was beautiful lady.
May you always remember the good times that you had with her and cherish and hold those memories close to your heart .
May you find comfort and peace knowing she´s in a better place.
Heaven gained another angel.
God Bless you and your family.

I think Mrs. Ruzic was the reason my brother, Terry, sister, Barbara, and I had the educational foundation to earn Bachelor´s degrees from Indiana colleges and universities. Terry and Barbara also went on to earn Master´s degrees in hospital administration and nursing respectively. I also had the privilege of working at Industrial Research until family obligations necessitated my resignation in 1974. What a blessing she was to all who knew her! May your happy memories abound as you mourn her loss.
