Nathaniel "Nate" Gipson, 81, passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2026.
Born on Jan. 14, 1945, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Walter Gipson Sr. and Malissa Gipson, both of whom preceded him in death, Nate lived a life defined by family, service, devotion and quiet strength.
In 1960, Nate was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, grounding his life in faith at an early age where he was also a Sunday School teacher.
Nate dedicated more than 30 years of service to NIPSCO before retiring, earning the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic and steady presence. His commitment to community extended beyond his career. He also proudly served on the Michigan City School Board.
Above all, Nate was a devoted family man. He shared 55 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Barbara Gipson, who preceded him in death in 2020 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Through her illness, Nate was a devoted and compassionate caregiver, embodying unconditional love and unwavering commitment until her passing.
He leaves behind his daughters, Gayle Gipson and Melissa (Rodney) McCollum, who knew him not just as a father, but as their steady foundation. His grandchildren – Jada, Myles, Camryn, and Carsyn – made their papa smile in a way only they could. He is also survived by his brothers, Walter Gipson Jr., Larry (Shirley) Gipson and Anthony (Andrea) Gipson; sisters, Estelle (James) Henley and Marion Demps; and his lifelong best friend, Charles Grinston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; and his sister, Katherine Gipson.
Nate was deeply loved not only by his immediate family, but also by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, neighbors and friends whose lives he touched in meaningful ways.
Nate found joy in life's simple pleasures – playing golf, tending to his yard, grilling for family gatherings, watching westerns and sitting back with good music playing. The soulful sounds of Randy Crawford and Joe Sample were often the soundtrack of his home.
Nate will be remembered as a selfless, steady presence – a wonderful neighbor, trusted friend, dedicated family man, and loving daddy and papa. And those close to him will miss his favorite line, "love you mo."
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at www. nationalmssociety.org.
