Charles Edward Tackett, a man whose kindness and smile were as constant as the nature he so dearly loved, passed away peacefully on the morning of Dec. 6, 2025, in Michigan City, Indiana. At his daughter's home, in the warm embrace of both his daughters.
Born on May 9, 1935, in Lake City, Arkansas, to Ithmer J. and Clara M. (Moore) Tackett, Charles's journey through life was marked by a profound love for his family, friends and the great outdoors.
Charles's life was rich with relationships that transcended time and circumstance. His former spouse, Claudia "Jean" (John Turner) Mosley whom he married in 1963, remained a cherished companion throughout his life, their bond unbroken by their divorce. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Baietto and Traci (Kerry) McColly, who will forever remember his gentle guidance and unwavering support. He was preceded in death by his beloved girlfriend, Shirley "Shirl" Sater, and his friends, Harold Rodgers and Bill Richmann. He would speak of them often and missed them dearly
Charles was a beloved brother to Virgil (Jewel), Lela (Arville) Chaffin, James and Ernest (Shirley) Tackett, all of whom predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by many beloved in laws. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Ian (Victoria) and Seth Pearson, and his great-grandchildren, Rowan and Juniper Pearson, who will carry forward his love for life's simple pleasures. Charles also held a special place in his heart for his nephews, Ronnie (Theresa) Tackett of Arkansas, Ricky (Diana) Tackett of Missouri and Dennis (Margie) Chaffin of Arkansas, as well as the many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were dear to him. He is also survived by sisters-in-law; Vicki Dobkins (Bruce Moisan), Ann Hoyle and brother-in-law Ken (Ginny) Mosley. He also leaves behind a special friend and frequent visitor, Mark (Rose) Boots, whom he held in high regard.
Charles joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and was proud to have been a Marine (Semper Fi!). After his service he moved near Detroit, Michigan and stayed with family there, working for a car manufacturer, he then followed his older brother Ernest to Michigan City in the late 50s to work for Pullman standard. He has held many jobs over the years. Notably he worked at Bethlehem Steel, Michigan City Area Schools and he worked as a material handler at Vitamins Inc. for over 30 years. He forged many great friendships from working with people that were more like family than co-workers.
His interests reflected his love for the great outdoors. An avid fisherman, ginseng and marble hunter. Charles found solace in nature and hiking. His passion for animals shone brightly in his care for birds and his cherished cats, Mama, Peaches, Shadow and Midnight who will miss him terribly. Charles enjoyed many vacations with his family to Kentucky and Tennessee for fishing and fun. He enjoyed traveling to Arkansas for family reunions.
The world was a better place for having Charles in it, he was always greeting others with a smile and a kind word. He never met a stranger. He had a gentle demeanor; he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and the gentle reminder to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.
As the sun sets on the life of Charles Edward Tackett, we remember a man whose presence was a comfort, whose laughter was infectious, and whose heart was a refuge. His was a life well-lived, full of passion, kindness, and an enduring love for the world around him. Charles's spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of his smile and the depth of his kindness.
