Harlene D. Veatch, age 92, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026. She was born on Oct. 23, 1933, in La Porte, to the late Harley and Ramona (Purdy) Cook.
Harlene dedicated 30 years of service to the School City of La Porte, where she worked as a librarian at the former Maple School, and in Food Service at Kesling School. She took great pride in her work and the many relationships she formed over the years.
On June 20, 1953, Harlene married the love of her life, William J. Veatch. They shared many wonderful years together until his passing on Nov. 7, 2020. Harlene is lovingly remembered by her children, Cindy Hignite, Robert (Cindy) Veatch, Rodger (Linda) Veatch and Randall (Debbie) Veatch, all of La Porte; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, who brought her great joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, William; her son, Russell Veatch; and her siblings, Dan Cook, Bill Cook, Guyla Riley, Cherie Lockhart and Willow Hammond.
Harlene and William were deeply involved in the local auction community for nearly 50 years. Whether attending or helping behind the scenes, auctions were a shared passion and an important part of their lives.
Visitation for Harlene and her husband, William, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. (CST) on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.
A memorial service for Harlene and William will begin at 11 a.m. (CST) on Saturday at the funeral home, immediately following the visitation.
