James Paul Lange, 73, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022.
He was born in Michigan City, Indiana, on Dec. 18, 1948, to Paul Charles and Lillian (Schultz) Lange.
He married Susan Quinn on May 2, 1970, who survives in La Porte, Indiana, along with sons, Joseph (Malinda Hays) Lange and Daniel (Amy Irk) Lange; grandchildren, Logan Lange and Dylan Lange; a brother, David Lange; sisters-in-law, Pat and Gail; and nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Jim and Sue met in 1968. She had a '68 maroon Plymouth Satellite; he had a blue '68 Plymouth GTX. Cattin' the drag up Franklin to the lake then down to McDonalds, on to Azar's drive-in for a turn-around and back to the golden arches meeting friends and having some fries. Weekends were spent drag racing the GTX at U.S. 30 and Osceola drag strips.
Jim and Sue had many adventures four-wheeling in Canada, Colorado and Michigan. After the boys came, we went everywhere together, helping their dad get the Land Cruiser ready for a special trip to South Dakota, and having them drive their vehicles with us on trail rides.
Driving up and down the sand dunes and building sandcastles in Michigan was a family favorite trip. Fall color trips to Northern Michigan was a must do for Jim and lifelong friends riding the trails.
Jim was very proud of his sons and their many talents. He was a loving husband, father and a great PaPa to Dylan, and will be greatly missed. Jim retired after 37 years from NIPSCO Bailly Generating Station as a power plant master mechanic. He also was a proud member of the United Steel Workers Local Union 12775.
Special thanks to Franciscan Home Care, Catherine and Mindy, for exceptional care, and to Dunes Hospice.
Cremation will take place and a Celebration of Life Service will be held later. Arrangements are being handled by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana.
