Jerry B. Brown, age 86, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Jan. 29, 2026. Jerry was born on May 4, 1939, to James C. Brown and Margarite L. Prast, who have preceded him in death.
Jerry is survived by his devoted lifetime partner of more than 30 years, Camille (Slater) Beasley. He is lovingly remembered by his niece, Vickie (Gary) Rease of Parrish, Florida; great-nephew, Casey (Jaime) Rease of Clearwater, Florida; and great-niece, Meridith (Jon) Minch of Powell, Ohio; and two great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews. Also left to cherish his memory are his protégé, the son he never had, Scott Roberts of Scotty's Dynamic Design who helped Jerry run his business; and the entire extended Slater family who adoringly called him "Uncle Jerry."
He was also preceded in death by his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and William "Bill" Weddle, whom he loved dearly; as well as his cherished dogs, Mosey, Amos and Buster Brown.
Jerry Brown, a lifelong resident of Michigan City, passed away surrounded by love and memories. He was a proud graduate of Elston High School, Class of 1959, where he was known as a spirited "Red Devil." Jerry wore red with pride and was active in numerous sports, including tennis, track and cross country, though basketball was his true passion. Fondly nicknamed "Jumpin' Jerry Brown," he was the only player throughout five years to play on Coach Doug Adams' undefeated team that won the ENIHSC championship. He went on to graduate from Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Jerry devoted much of his life to teaching and coaching at Elston High School, where he taught physical education and driver's education, and was affectionately known to students and colleagues alike as "Coach."
A dedicated entrepreneur, Jerry owned "The Trophy Source" for 34 years, often alongside his beloved dog, Amos. He also spent two decades working at the market in Shipshewana and was co-owner of DJ's on Barker.
An avid collector of classic cars, Jerry's favorites were his two red Ford Falcons. He also enjoyed countless years riding motorcycles with friends, embracing adventure and camaraderie. Known for his playful humor and loyal friendship, there wasn't a person in the community who didn't know "Downtown Jerry Brown."
The family extends a special thank you to the nurses in the Franciscan Health Emergency Room, the staff on the fourth floor at Franciscan Health, the entire staff of Life Care Center, and especially nurse Amy of AseraCare Hospice for her compassionate care.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in honor of Jerry to a local dog or cat shelter of your choice.
