Thomas L. (Tom) Horvath, 81, of New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was born in South Bend, Nov. 17, 1943, to John and Mary Alice (Rodgers) Horvath, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Yvonne (Freeland); and by their three children, Karen (Matt) Horvath-Wulf of Silver Spring, Maryland, Kathy (Doug) Moses of Indianapolis, Indiana, and John (Sara) Horvath of Bentleyville, Ohio. They have seven grandchildren, Katie Horvath-Wulf, Grace, Vivian and Hugh Moses, and Harrison, Max and Crosby Horvath. He is also survived by his two sisters, Nancy (Steve) Taplin of New Carlisle, Indiana, and Sue (Dan) Akin of Castle Rock, Colorado; as well as many loving cousins and extended family.
Tom graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1962, where he played basketball and was a 10-year member of the Hudson Township 4-H Club. He graduated from Purdue University in 1966 with a degree in agriculture and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1970.
Tom was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and the American Legion Post 297 in New Carlisle, Indiana, a Hudson Township 4-H leader, and a president of the La Porte Co. Holstein Breeders Association.
He was employed by UniRoyal in Mishawaka and then became a claims adjuster for Travelers Insurance. When his father retired, Tom returned full time to the family dairy farm, Overlookin' Farms, as co-owner with his two cousins, Rich and Al Horvath. When they all retired, Tom enjoyed working for ServiceMaster as a painter.
After retiring in 1999, Tom most enjoyed spending as much time as he and Yvonne could with their grandchildren and being at their many sports, musical and school activities. When Tom and Yvonne weren't traveling to see the grandkids or the great treasures of the United States, Tom could be found creating woodworking projects or maintaining their lawn and rose beds. He will always be remembered as a man who loved all of his family, was hard working, humble, loved to laugh, and especially enjoyed dining out with his many friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A visitation for Tom will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 4 until 8 p.m. EST at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. A rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
