William Lankford Flatt, 93, of Orland, Indiana, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 8, 2026, at home.
He was born Sept. 4, 1932, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Russell L. and Anna C. (Skaggs) Flatt.
On April 9, 1976, he married Roberta (Beamer) Flatt, who preceded him in death.
Bill was an Army veteran having served from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict. He went directly to work for Studebaker from 1953-55. He also worked at Allis Chalmers from 1955-58, then finally Ford Motor Co Stamping Plant, Chicago Heights, from 1958-1988. He was a proud 70-year UAW member. After retirement from Ford, he volunteered his time to the Swanson Center to do taxes for the elderly as a tax preparer. He helped in that capacity for at least 20 years. He also enjoyed wood working and automotive repair and traveling.
Bill was the foundation of the family.
He is survived by his children, Deborah Walls and Scott (Josie) Flatt; grandchildren, Jamie Walls, Julie (Brian) Wagner, Gracie May Flatt and Wyatt Scott Flatt; great-grandchildren, Dominic Del Toro, Harvey Walls, McKayla Wagner and Hudson Wagner; sister-in-law, Rowena Flatt; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Roberta; son, William R. Flatt; sisters, Joyce Snipes and Wanda Wilhelm; brother, Russel L. Flatt Jr.; grandson, Jeff Walls; and a brother-law, Irving "Willie" Wilhelm.
Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, 219-362-3100, is caring for the arrangements. There will be a graveside service at Pine Lake Cemetery, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Joseph Watterson officiating.
