Kevin Kelly Obituary

Kevin Alan Kelly East Lansing Age 52, died peacefully December 15, 2008 surrounded by his family. Kevin was born in Toledo, Ohio. He lived in Poughkeepsie, NY and became a lifelong resident of East Lansing, MI following his graduation from Michigan State University in 1979. Kevin was a graduate of Arlington High School, Poughkeepsie, NY where he actively competed in football, basketball, and baseball. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan State University and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University. Kevin was employed by the Michigan State Medical Society for 30 years and served as its Executive Director. Throughout his career, he received many honors locally and nationally for his efforts to deliver quality medical care to the residents of the State of Michigan. Significant among the honors was the American Medical Association Medical Executive Achievement Award, received before their Annual convention in Chicago in 1999, and the Michigan State University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004. Over his lifespan he was active as a member or officer for a host of Professional and Community Service organizations too numerous to enumerate. He gave his time and resources generously to local efforts, particularly as they related to children's well being and young adult sport programs. He was a member of The Peoples Church of East Lansing and the Country Club of Lansing. Kevin loved his family more than anything in the world. Among his many accomplishments, by far the most significant was the nurturing of his family and friends. He made the people happy! He was the catalyst and consummate planner of good times. His eyes sparkled when others were happy and having a good time. To him, every day was a celebration. Kevin had a full life. Knowing him, even in death, he would encourage people to enjoy life and follow their dreams. He lives onin everybody's heart. Kevin is survived by his wife and lifetime partner, Jamie Savvas Kelly; two sons, Daniel Peter Kelly and Michael Ronald Kelly; his sister, Kimberly Hope Kelly; and parents, Ronald and Bonny Kelly. Kevin had a wealth of friends who came to his and his family's aid while he fought his year-long battle to live. Their efforts and kindness are sincerely appreciated. We thank them for helping to make a difficult journey easier. A memorial service will be held January 14, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at The Peoples Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kevin A. Kelly Action Fund, c/o Capital Region Community Foundation, 6035 Executive Dr., Suite 104, Lansing, MI 48911, a charitable fund established in Kevin's honor to continue Kevin's mission of helping those in need. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing.

Jamie, Daniel, Michael and all,

In my years following first meeting Kevin, I have lived, or visited, many parts of the country. It always seemsed that wherever I was there would always be a new Kevin Kelly to meet. Some might say that it's a rather common name. But no matter how many others I meet, it's even more apparent that Kevin was anything but a common man.

We not only all feel your loss; we share in it as well.

Both Dawn and I send our condolences but also smile at the good fortune that we had to know him.

I am so sorry to hear of Kevin's passing. He served on the board of Health Central when I worked there, and was always such a friendly, professional, kind gentleman. I particularly remember a discussion with him about us both being East Lansing people and “Beggulars” at Beggar’s Banquet. He suggested that our lives could be measured by where we sat – when we were young, we sat at the bar and met new people; as young adults we sat at a booth and had chili and a beer with friends; in our middle years, we sat in the back room with the quilted tablecloths and enjoyed a quiet meal and glass of wine with our spouses; then, in our dotage we would sit at the table in the front window and “hold court” as old friends and new stopped by to see us. He told me he’d meet me at the front table when we were both old and gray. I’ll be there for a chili and a beer.
