Larry VanOstran Obituary

Larry Lee VanOstran

Lansing - Larry Lee VanOstran passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021 after a very brief but immensely heroic battle with cancer.

He leaves behind his wife, Heidi, of 35 years; two daughters, Kimberly (Michael) Fiero and Amanda (Nathan) Hall; sisters, Judy (Randy) Hengesbach, Shirley McKenzie (Bryon), and Carol Daggett (deceased); grandchildren, "Amazing Grace" (deceased), Abbey, Benjamin, and Kasey Fiero, Hayden, Hannah, Hudson, and Harper Hall, and a magnitude of beloved family and friends.

Larry graduated from J.W. Sexton in 1964. He went on to spend 53 years in real estate, making thousands of families' dreams come true. Larry was incredibly dedicated and committed to the profession he loved.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. During that time, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.

After his service in the Navy, Larry became a lifetime member of the Lansing VFW Post 701, serving on the Color Guard and past commander.

He had a passionate love of calligraphy which he shared with all his clients and friends by creating beautiful personalized notes and cards that he gave them. The joy that came from receiving one of his personalized cards will forever be cherished.

Heaven could not be more proud to welcome this "BIG Package of WOW!"

Private services have been held.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wounded Warriors Program in Larry's honor.

I was saddened to hear that my dear colleague and friend Larry passed away. For 20+ years we were office mates at Coldwell Banker. Though both of us served in the United States Navy, my duty stations were all stateside which precluded me from membership in the VFW. However, Larry invited me to join in when members were informally gathering. Whenever I introduced Larry to people who came to the office to see me, I stated “this is Larry and he’s Big on service” which always drew a smile or chuckle from both them and Larry. Larry was extremely good natured and always asked about my son and daughter. He will be sorely missed by all his fellow Realtors. RIP Big Larry, I salute you for your service.

I met Larry in 2006, renting the hall at post 701 for my wife's 50th birthday. After that he hired me to DJ there. I was there Friday nights for 11 years. Larry liked to sing Karaoke. At Sunday breakfast at the post we would make him "The Larry Special" extra large omelet. He was a very nice guy. Anita and I will miss his deep laughter.

My thoughts and prayers go out his family as we all share in the loss of this kind and wonderful man. I will always treasure the times we shared at 701 and the way he was there to share ideas and his leadership experience along with his tremendous support to a newly formed Men's Auxiliary with his entire family at our breakfast events. Speaking for all of the former members of that Aux. I say Thank you for you service to VFW Post 701 as Past Commander and to to your Comrades through your service with the Color Guard and for your sacrifice to our Country in Viet Nam Past Post President Pete Turcotte

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Larry was a giant of a man, but gentle as they come. My love and prayers got out to his family. A lot of good childhood memories will be tucked away in my family hearts. Love to you all. Old neighbor Laurie Horanburg Worley

Growing up, Larry was our neighbor. To me, being 6 yrs younger, bigger than life. Always had the "cool cars", always washing and waxing to keep them looking that way. I was impressed with his service on 'The Enterprise' and the stories he had to tell or told by his parents after visiting him there.
Mostly the thing I remember about Larry in later years was his continued service in the VFW Color Guard. When my father, Warren, passed away two of my brother- in-laws, Ron and Dave, let me know that my veteran father deserved to have a military salute at his burial. Impossibly, with just one days notice, Larry put together an honor guard for the funeral.
I have The Flag and shell casings proudly displayed that he gave me that day.
Thank you Larry and your respect for my father's military service will not be forgotten.

Such a loss for all, Larry was a warm and kind man and will be missed by so many, when we were kids he seemed bigger than life and as life went on he had a heart that was just as big. I’m sorry I didn’t know about the loss but my prayers are with all of his family.
