Max Shunk Obituary

Max D. Shunk Lansing Born January 17, 1930 in Lansing, the son of the late Clare Shunk and Lucille (Marvin) Mumrow, passed away May 27, 2012 at the age of 82, following the path God laid for him. Max was a resident of Lansing most of his life. He was a former member of Miller Road Bible Church and an active member of Mount Hope Church, where in past years Max was passionately involved in many vital ministries. He served in the National Guard and was a former Gideon and Red Cross volunteer. He was on the Lansing School Board for 12 years, and CATA Board for 13 years, serving as president on each board for many of those years. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary in 2003; and son Darwin in 2010. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Darlene Barkema Shunk; daughters, Debbie Shunk-Gillam, Terri Ann Frasier, daughter-in-law, Wanda Shunk; and other children, George (Lisa) Barkema, Debbie (Dan) Allen and David (Gina) Barkema; grandchildren, Jennifer (Eric) Vorm, Jon E. Shunk, Bethany (David) Shunk-Gerstner, Tabatha (Timm) Rees, Patrick Gillam, Andrew Frasier, Jason Allen, Craig (Kelli) Allen, Jennifer Allen, Michael Barkema, Chelsea Barkema, Kathlene Barkema, Zach Barkema, Mike Barkema, and Kristi Barkema; eleven great grandchildren; and brother Jerry (Shirley) Shunk. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2012 at Mount Hope Church, Main Sanctuary, 202 S. Creyts Rd., Lansing, MI with the Pastor John Elieff officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 31, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI and one hour prior to the service at the church. Those desiring may make contributions to Anna's House, c/o of Mount Hope Church, 202 S. Creyts Rd., Lansing, MI 48917 in Memory of Max. Uncle Max will never be forgotten. Having two boys, I only hope that they maintain the bond that Max and my dad kept through the years. He will be missed. My thoughts and well wishes go out to you, Darlene, as well as to Debbie, Terri, Wanda and the entire family.
