Paul Winegar Obituary

Paul Winegar Lansing Born March 18, 1926 in Clinton County, Michigan to the late Edwin and Myrtie Winegar, Paul Winegar passed away after a short illness on January 25, 2010, at the age of 83. He was preceded in his death by his brothers, Donald and William and by his sisters, Nina, Esther and infant Mary. Paul was the devoted husband of Mary Margaret, his first wife who passed away in 1996, and of his second wife, Patricia, who survives him. His love and care for them remains an inspiration for his sons, Ray (Elfreda), Stephen (Gale), and Joseph (Karen Gipson) Winegar; for his daughters-in-law, Michele Winegar and Mary Winegar; and for Patricia's children, Jim (Mirla) Moses, Kathy Hurl and Margaret (Tony) Droste. He was a proud veteran of WWII and Korea, and a member of the Lansing and Portland VFW. He built and successfully managed Paul's Colorama in Lansing until 1970 and retired 25 years later as a real estate broker. His leadership was exemplified by his service of 20 or more years as a member of the board of the Gabriels Credit Union, a volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America for which he received the St. George Award, and as a member of the Resurrection St. Vincent DePaul Society for which he served one term as president. Paul enjoyed a series of outdoor sports including sailing, running, tennis, walking and golf, and he loved the fellowship of those with whom he played. He welcomed all, and was persistently loyal in his relationships. He faced the world with optimism and abiding faith; he ministered to the needs of the young, the old, the sick and the poor. Though he touched us with his tenderness and quiet joy, he sang his hymns right out loud. He is survived in the fond hearts of his grandchildren, Jeff, Paul, (Courtney), Erin, Laura, Thomas, Kathleen, Patrick, Megan and Ben as well as in those of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of his second marriage, Ceclia, Jennifer, Sarah, James Joseph, Brandy, Tish, Tycee, James Anthony, Lamar, Alana, Ciara and Tyler. And he survives in his lifetime example to us that the opportunity to take care of others is every bit as much a gift as is the wide smile feeling of sinking a 12 foot putt for par on a fresh spring day. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Friday, January 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Resurrection. Visitation will be at Gorsline Runciman Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday January 28, 2010. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to Resurrection St. Vincent de Paul Society (1531 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48912) or the Alzheimer's Association (P.O Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011).

One of the highlights in my life was last May when my sister Billie Kay and I stayed with Uncle Paul for a few days on a road trip. His smiles and humor, his yummy rhubarb pies (2!), the delight he took with being with us, "his girls", will last a lifetime.
I will miss him so, such a dear sweet man. But I think of him in heaven, with Mary Margaret, my dad and my brother Mike and smile!
I send love and peace to my cousins, Ray, Steve, and Joe and to their families.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Ray, Steve, Joe and all of Paul's family. This very well written obituary, due to it's nature, cannot describe all of the qualities posessed by Uncle Paul that made him dear to us. He loved live and he expressed love in so many ways. He was greatly admired by us.

To the Winegar family we extend our condolences and also can relay that Paul & Mary often told proud stories of their legacy. We didn't get to know Pat, but he was dedicated to her as well. Your beautiful obituary said it well, and we say Godspeed to gentleman Paul. So sorry we can't be there for your celebration of his life. Sincerely, Luke and Betsy Freund

My Uncle Paul was a wonderful man whom I truly loved to talk with. I always enjoyed his stories, I know he had many more he could have told me if I could have spent more time with him. He was always so proud of his family--he will be waiting for you just around the bend. Cherril

To the Winegar family: You have some pretty big shoes to fill! Your father mentored me for years and allowed me to see a much bigger picture for myself than I ever knew was possible. I would have to put him at the top of "My Most Unforgettable Characters" list. My sincerest condolances to all.

Charlie & I send our sincere sympathy to Ray, Freda, Paul, Courtney, Thomas, and Patrick Winegar, and the entire family of Paul Winegar. We had the privilege of meeting and spending time with Paul when our daughter, Courtney, became engaged to Paul's grandson, Paul Winegar. Charlie & I immediately found him to have such a zest for life with quite a wonderful sense of humor. We know he will be so missed and our hearts are sad for everyone. But, what a full life he led! We are sure everyone that knew him has a good story or two to tell about him, and just think of the great memories everyone has of this wonderful man named Paul!

Blessings,
