Wayne Clegg Obituary

Wayne Clegg Eaton Rapids Wayne was a lifelong farmer who took pride in telling friends and family he was Eaton County's oldest living registered Democrat and spent the better part of a century working to improve Eaton Rapids, died Friday. He was 95. Born on July 28, 1916, Wayne was a loyal father, loving grandfather and husband to Marguerite for 62 years until her death in 2004. Wayne was independent and adventuresome. For his 90th birthday, he asked for - and received - a flight in an ultra-light aircraft. Two years later, he toured Ireland for the first time. He was determined to remain living on his farm, still in the family name after more than 50 years, as long as his health allowed, tending the lawn on his riding mower into his 90s. Wayne had little interest in a quiet retirement. He stayed active in his church, First United Methodist, where he was a member for 75 years. He served on the Eaton County jury board until 2007, ending a 38-year tenure that began when the board was created. When Wayne took on a responsibility, he stuck to it. He was a longtime member of the local Rotary and spent decades working at Eaton Stamping until his retirement. He is a former chairman of the Eaton County Democratic Party. Wayne is survived by his children, Paula Clegg (Terry) and Will Clegg (Joni); and his grandchildren Rachel Hood (Sharon), Jordan Clegg (Anne) and Justin Clegg. He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite and his siblings Tige Clegg and Florence Fuller. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday November 8, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, 600 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids, MI with Pastor Daniel Hofmann officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 6 p.m. 8 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to www.shellyodell.com

I was at Island City Assisted Living nearly everyday visiting my mom, Grace Gruesbeck, and encountered Wayne most of the time. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him. He was very sharp and quick witted right to the very end. My Mom talks about him often. He will be missed there. My sincere condolences to Paula and other family.

Wayne had the best daughter in the world, dear Paula. And the best son- in- law to boot. They were devoted to his care in later life and were responsible for the wonderful quality of his last years. They never faltered in their determination to make sure that his later years were as dignified as they could be. I enjoyed meeting Wayne a number of times at Paula and Terry's home, where he often came for Sunday dinner, and he was a feisty and enjoyable gentleman. I know he will be missed greatly.
