Garrett Bender Obituary

Garrett Lee Bender LUBBOCK- Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Garrett Lee Bender, 32, of Lubbock at 11 a.m. MST, Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Faith Christian Family Church, 3401 North Norris Street, Clovis, N.M. Private burial will be in Lubbock. Our beloved Garrett went to be with the Lord on July 15, 2013, at his home in Lubbock surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Garrett was born on May 1, 1981 to Gary and Daena (Poynor) Bender in Clovis, N.M. Garrett grew up in Clovis and graduated from Clovis High School, where he played football and baseball. He moved to Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University, continuing his education with great difficulty even after his diagnosis of cancer. While living in Clovis Garrett attended Central Baptist Church and in Lubbock he attended Faith Christian Family Church and Experience Life Church. Garrett enjoyed many activities including music, reading, snow skiing, fishing, hunting, and following his New York Yankees. He was passionate about music, playing the piano from age six, and was a self-taught guitarist. Garrett's greatest joy in life was walking with Jesus, his Lord and Savior. His unwavering faith and trust in Jesus was a testimony to all who knew him. Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Gary and Daena Bender; younger brother, Chris Bender; maternal grandmother, Patsy Rogers all of Lubbock; maternal grandfather, Bobby Poynor of Ransom Canyon; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Miller of Clovis, N.M.; uncles and aunts, Darryle and Susie Bender, Duane Bender, Bruce Bender, Bryce and Jeanie Bender, and Terry and Michelle Poynor all of Clovis, N.M.; and Randy and Cindy Poynor of Santee, Calif.; along with many cousins, extended family, and a host of friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ. Garrett was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Gideon Bender. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joe Arrington Cancer Center, 4101 22nd Place, Lubbock, Texas 79410 or a charity of your choice. Your son was a man of strength and courage and fought the good fight of faith. A true warrior of God and was a gift of God to you. My heart is moved by compassion for your broken hearts, but one thing for sure Our wonderful Father has not forgotten your family. Be encouraged in the Lord that loves and comforts us in hard times when we have to let our loved ones go to be promoted into the loving arms of the one that created them. Psalms 56:8 says: He puts our tears into his bottle. He is always surrounding you with his amazing love. God bless you and your entire family. Connie Reiser Russell
