Margaret Blacker Obituary

Margaret Mason Blacker Margaret Mason Blacker, 94, of Lubbock passed away on April 25, 2012 in Lubbock. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012 in Resthaven Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service to celebrate her life, scheduled at 3 p.m. at the W.W. Rix Chapel. Margaret was born on March 15, 1918, in Amarillo, Texas to William T. and Josie May (Holman) Jesse. She married Robert L. Mason on July 7, 1940. He passed way March 29, 1987. Then she met Robert M. (Bob) Blacker, and they married August 1, 1988. Margaret was employed as secretary to Rev. Mr. Canterbury, Rector of St. Paul's-on-the-Plains Episcopal Church, and later as secretary to Rev. Dudley Strain, Minister of First Christian Church. She also was a legal secretary for the law firm of Bass and Hobbs and was secretary to U.S. District Judge Halbert O. Woodward until her retirement in 1973. Between 1973 and 1990, Margaret was involved in numerous volunteer activities, but she was most proud of two endeavors. She worked with special needs children at the Lubbock State School and at Milam's Children's Training Center. And she logged countless hours with Llano Estacado Audubon Society, serving as a secretary, director, and editor of their Scissortail newsletter. As Nature Trail Coordinator, she helped build and direct the LEAS nature trail and visitor's center at Buffalo Springs Lake. Many birders, hikers, school groups, and other nature enthusiasts have enjoyed the trail since its completion. Margaret is survived by her husband, Robert Blacker of Lubbock; a daughter, Karen McClendon of Sharpsburg, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Bill Halbert of Snyder, Texas; two grandsons, Brent McClendon and his wife Barbara of Fairfax, Va., and Chris Halbert and his wife Kara of Dallas, Texas; and two great-granddaughters. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in memory of Margaret Mason Blacker be made to the building fund of First Christian Church, 2323 Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79401. Services are under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.

My deepest sympathy to you, Aunt Margaret will be sorely missed by all. She was always a smilng, warm and such a gracious lady...always looked forward to being with her. I remember meeting her for the first time and I was awe struck, as a country girl of 12, she was absolutely the most 'with it' lady I'd ever met...that opinion never changed, she was like a second mother to me. It was so very good to get to visit with her and some of you all last year and am so very glad I made the trip now. You all will be in my prayers for comfort,. May she rest in peace. My condolences for your family. For all of us, Harvey Mason's children, Margaret was a favorite aunt. I will always remember how her smile and laugh would brighten a room. My own love of birds, multiple bird feeders in the yard etc. I'm sure was influenced by Aunt Margaret! Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. My condolences.
