Oswald Scott Obituary

Lubbock- Oswald Virgil (OV) Scott, Jr. passed away in Austin, Texas, with his beloved son John Scott at his side, on November 21, 2016. He was 87 years old.

OV was born in Dallas, Texas to Oswald Virgil Scott and Elizabeth Ward Scott and grew up in Decatur, Texas with his loving parents and brother John Michael Scott II. After graduating high school in Decatur, OV attended the University of Texas, where he studied petroleum engineering. After graduation, OV joined the Marines where he became a fighter pilot. During his service, OV met the love of his life, Mary Frances Williams (Fran), and they married in 1955. Soon after, they moved to Hawaii to further his training and had their first son, Curtis Taylor Scott. The three of them were very happy in Hawaii, but he retired from the Marines to attend the University of Texas School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1961.

OV and Fran moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1961 when OV joined the law firm of Crenshaw, Dupree and Milam, becoming partner in 1963. Fran and OV had their second son, John Michael Scott, in 1964. The Scott family was an engaged and active member of the Lubbock community for more than 40 years, leading and participating in a variety of civic and volunteer activities. OV, as part of his law practice, represented an untold number of individuals and corporations throughout Texas from his offices in Lubbock. He joined Baker, Brown and Thompson in 1993, and retired from practicing law in 1996.

In addition to being dedicated and well-respected lawyer, O.V. was a successful entrepreneur and businessman, helping launch a publicly traded telecommunications company and Stubbs BBQ in Austin. O.V. was also a gifted athlete and exceptional golfer, and won many golf tournaments and club championships in Lubbock and later in Austin, after he and Fran moved in 2002 to be closer to their son John and their grandchildren.

A man of incredible integrity and character, OV's greatest pride and source of inspiration and love was his family. OV is survived by his son John M. Scott, and daughter-in-law Jessica N. Scott, grandsons Cade C. Scott and Beck M. Scott, granddaughter Parker F. Scott. He is preceded in death by his parents Oswald Virgil Scott and Elizabeth Ward, brother John Michael Scott II, beloved wife Frances W. Scott, and children Curtis T. Scott and Kristin Scott.

The family will hold a service on August 15th at McPherson Cellars from 7-9pm in Lubbock. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the Endowment Scholarships set up in the names of Curt Scott and Frances Scott at Texas Tech University or the charity of your choice.
