Samuel King Obituary

Samuel Miles King, MD LUBBOCK- Samuel Miles King died on August 19, 2012 at the age of 81. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends, and his previous devotion to the practice of the medical specialty of Cardiology. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on August 8, 1931. He was the youngest of three children, born to John Barre King and Josephine Bechtel King. He spent his formative years in San Antonio, Texas. He received a BS degree from Trinity University and his M.D. degree from University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1956. He interned at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland from 1956-1957. He served in the United States Navy from 1957-1959. He began his specialty training after three years of internal medicine at UTMB and in 1962 he was accepted to the esteemed Cardiology fellowship under S. Gilbert Blount, M.D., University of Colorado. In 1964, he began Cardiology practice joining the outstanding Cardiology Group of Drs. William Gordon, Brandon Hull, and Dr. Joe Arrington in Lubbock, Texas. He was designated to establish the first Cardiac Catheterization and Coronary Angiographic Laboratory in Lubbock, in addition to his normal practice. It was a difficult undertaking yet exciting, finding and training a cardiac catheterization crew, purchasing appropriate equipment, and then finally performing the first coronary angiogram on April 7, 1970. Dr. King with his Cardiology group worked with cardiac surgeons, Dr. Don Bricker, Dr. Martin Dalton and many others, and during the ensuing decades, Lubbock became a prominent cardiac center. All of this required great effort, and Dr. King was well known by his colleagues as tirelessly dedicated. Dr. King was board certified in Internal Medicine as well as the subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Diseases. He was a member of the Texas Club of Internists as well as the Texas Club of Cardiologists. He was president of the Lubbock Heart Association in 1968 and initiated the Heart Ball, which continues as a fund raising annual event to this day. During the 1970s Dr. King became acquainted with Carol Mosser, who became the love of his life and on August 19, 1978 they married. Dr. King enjoyed travel, golf, social activities, and engaging in his renowned sense of humor. He was happiest serving others and socializing with friends was his daily highlight. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his father, John; mother, Josephine; and brother, John. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; his daughter, Courtney, her husband Duncan and their son, Miles of Dallas, Texas; his sister, Mary Jo Nairn of New Braunfels, Texas; many nieces and nephews; numerous in-laws; and dear friends, Mildred Lane and Oscar King. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at St. Paul's-on-the-Plains Episcopal Church, 1510 Ave X, with Rev. James P Haney V officiating. Family will receive friends at Sanders Funeral Home, 1420 Main ST, on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Covenant Heart and Vascular Institute, in care of Covenant Foundation, 3623 22nd Place, Lubbock, Texas 79410.

Carol and Courtney, Sam was a wonderful Son-In-law. I will never forget all the family get-togethers--It won't be the same without him. He was never anything but good to me.

August 29, 2012

I grew up with Sam when he moved with Buzz and Josie and his mother across the street from my home in Alamo Heights (a suburb of San Antonio). We were both teenagers and paperboys for the San Antonio Express/News. Sam was also an excellent athlete; he was an all-city lineman for the Alamo Heights Mules. We also attended Trinity Univ together as townies. Sam bought a new Plymouth sedan with his newspaper earnings to drive us to Trinity for 3 years, where he finished his pre-med courses in only three years! I saw little of Sam after college, but always remember him with fondness and respect. I shall never forget him.

A friend from Lubbock called late last night with the sad news of Sam's leaving us for his heavenly home.
Working with him in the Cath Labs was an honor I shall not forget. He was a true genius. What respect I had for his abilities and intellect. God will give him special wings. Stop and see us in Hurst when you come to see Courtney and Duncan.

Dear Carol and Courtney: My heart goes out to you both. I am so sorry that I was unable to come to the funeral--broke my heart that I wasn't there to honor Sam. I loved him--that big teddy bear of a man who also happened to be brilliant, and a wonderful, caring doctor. He was so thoughtful with J.R.--he always left us with hope. I will miss the naughty emails we traded, and I will miss his intellect and his kindness. My love to you both.

Carol, Bette and I were saddened to read of Sams death. He was a Hail Fellow - Well Met as Shakespeare would have described him...friendly , congenial, and fun to be with . We have missed your company for 12 years , but we think of you two often as we recall the wonderful trips with the Texas Club. Sam so often would amaze me.He would have a rip roaring great time in the evening but at 7AM he would be on the front row of the auditorium waiting for the lectures to start. I admired him in so many ways, for his brilliance, his personality and for his selection of such a beautiful and charming wife. We send our love to you and Courney . Bette and Roy

Dear Carol: I remember meeting both you and Sam in 1978 at Glen Stambaugh's home the year I began practice in Lubbock. That started a friendship that simply grew with time. I remember flying Bob Wey to San Antonio to visit Sam when he was confined to the burn unit there after being burned in the boating accident. I can't count the numerous times Sam helped evaluate my patients with their cardiac problems to ensure a safe surgical experience. The words in the obituary describe the man. The real Sam King though, was known by his patients and the love he had in his heart for them. Sam was a great physician, teacher, leader, and friend. He will be missed by all of us. Sorry we cannot be there. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Ron and Gail North
