Clotilde Chairez Obituary

CLOTILDE CHAIREZ Clotilde "Cleo" Chairez, 74, of Las Vegas, passed away July 8, 2009. She was born June 3, 1935, in Chihuahua, Mexico, and was a resident of Nevada for 18 years. Although she held many jobs throughout her life, Cleo's greatest accomplishment was love to her family at every stage of her life. As a daughter and sister, as a wife and mother, and most importantly, as Grandma Cleo, she was always grateful for what little she had, and took great joy in sharing everything that God had given her. Love and family were her greatest treasures. As a teenager, she was sponsored by Evelyn Rosen of El Paso to lawfully immigrate to the United States. After paying her tithe, Cleo gave all of her money to her father to help support her family in Mexico. As a spouse and mother of four, she graciously cleaned homes for Ancil Hoffman in Sacramento, the trainer for boxer Max Baer, to earn extra money to send her children to religious schools. She always held a special bond with Jewish families, since the Rosens and Hoffmans had helped her at critical crossroads in her life. Cleo also worked as a teacher's assistant for the Clark County School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, MSgt. Pedro Chairez, Oct. 18, 1973. Widowed at the age of 38, Cleo struggled to make sure that her four children could pursue their dreams of higher education. To Cleo, generosity was a genetic inheritance from her father's family who were all givers. To her children and grandchildren, generosity was contagious, because being willing to share and give to others was the true essence of showing God's love. Survivors include her children, Don Chairez (Maria) of Henderson, David Chairez (Krista) of Las Vegas, Dina Schwalbach (Jon) of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Dennis Chairez of Sacramento, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. In lieu of donations, Cleo would have wanted you to do an act of kindness for somebody else. Flowers fade, but a gift of kindness is remembered forever. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the Carmichael Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4600 Winding Way, Sacramento, CA 95841.

Mom,

Everyday I miss you more and more, your phone calls on special days or just everyday hour long phone calls about nothing. I have gone to call you so many times to ask you something and realize your not going to answer the phone. Can't talk to anybody like we used to talk, your marker is on the way thanks to David heading the project. Thank you for the 39 years and 51 weeks of the best mother a child could ever have.

Love you Mom,

Cleo,
You left us way to soon. I remember well, nearly 3 decades ago, when you welcomed me to the family. You introduced me to papas fritas, homemade tortillas, and salsa made the right way. Maybe I can blame a few of my extra pounds on you. Your kindness and achievements have been noted by many on these pages. One achievement they left out was you earning your own college degree, just another example of you striving to improve yourself and the fortunes of those around you. You were truly a remarkable woman, and we miss you.

Your "favorite" son-in-law,

Cleo was a great mother and grandmother. It was a challenge to keep up with her. She was always on the go. Few know that she worked as an instructional aide at Monaco Middle school and at Robinson Middle School, helping students so they would go on to graduate from school. She was very kind and loving and will be missed. Maria Chairez, daughter in law and fellow educator.

Our friendship started with spaghetti...

Cleo and I met as I was eating lunch inside the breakroom at Robison Middle School. She asked me about her pension and as our conversation went on somehow we got on the subject of Italian food!

Because I haven't had the fortune of being a CCSD employee, I only saw her every other week. But even then, for some reason she was always happy to see me! She always did try to help make everyone feel special. I'll never forget her big smile and the amount of patience she had, especially with me. Because I can't cook, she spent so much time trying to explain to me her recipe for her very own spaghetti sauce!

I hope she knows that she also made me happy whenever we talked.

To me, there will never be spaghetti as great as the ones you made. Not before, not now, not ever.

Dearest Family,
I am thinking of a picture that Cleo carried showing ALL of her beautiful grandchildren. In her eyes, these children were the most beautiful and gifted of any children ever born here on earth. She was right of course, but I always told her 'maybe' just to see that beautiful smile and those dancing eyes gleam at me as if disagreeing would change these facts! Let me tell you that as the ELL teacher at Robison who worked most closely with your beautiful mother/grandmother I will never forget her beauty both out and in, or her magnificent story. I am Marjorie Williams and I want to thank you for sharing her with us at Robison. I was still looking for Mariachi music for her to give her in August. Now I will play it for her spirit to hear in heaven. I did not know of her passing until today. I hope you ALL know how important you were to her. Much love, Marjie

Don,

I am so sad to hear of your mother's death. She was a wonderful person, the most caring and giving mother, and a blessing to all her friends, family, and aquaintances. One of my best memories is going over to your house in high school and having the best tomales and enchiladas. She always wanted to know how you were doing, was cheerful and giving. Never focused on herself or talked about her needs or problems. She will have a special place of honor in heaven. An excellent example of how we should live our lives. I am so glad I could share a small part of her life. There will be only fond memories of her.
Thank you, Don, for your friendship.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and Dina, David, and Dennis.

Your friend,

Cleo was a mentor to me on topics as diverse as how to make coffee, pick a husband and choose a career path. I'm thankful for the two extended times we spent together when our brother was fighting leukemia. I finally had one on one time with her and not just as the little sister but as a peer.

To Cleo's Family,
She was a special lady, who touch everyone she worked with. All the students loved her, she truely taught them about life. At lunch we always good look forward to her bring some good old home cook lunch, to share with us all. Every morning she would stop by my office and say hello, or if she saw in the hallway, she would say how are you doing. She was an Angel on Earth, now she is one in Heaven. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Don, Dina, David and Dennis,
Your Mom, my Aunt has always been someone I looked up to. When I was little and we would go to your house, I would be in awe of her. She was the first woman I knew that could drive stick. Remember the VW bus?! She was independent and hardworking but still a baker and a great cook. All of you were able to do and be what you are because of her. I hope that some of who she was is in some of who I am today.
I love you all.
Your cousin Patsy

Mom, thank you for everything, for telling me about my life and what you did for me, what you said to the Doc's at the time when you were carrying me. I missed you calling me today, you called me every year on this day, I love you and tell my father hello and hug him for me

Grandma,

There are so many things I wish I could say to you still, and yet I have the feeling you and I knew eachother better then anyone on this earth.
I know this sounds terrible, but if you could please manage to send me some of your strenghth the next couple of days, I have the feeling I'm going to need it.

Friends and Loved ones,
I must say, I truly consider myself blessed to have known Grandma the way I did, and her me. Our connection was always something out of this world, and I must believe in my heart that the reason being was because my grandmother was an angel. If you never had someone like this in your life, my grandma would want you to know...you can be that person. Instead of being what you need, be what others need, and in there you will find eternal joy and happiness that no amount of money could ever buy. You need not look any further then your own two hands to do something for someone else, it takes only a few minutes, and a full heart to make a difference in someones life. Grandma Cleos legacy was helping others, and that legacy can and will live on through her family, friends, and strangers who are simply doing there part to pay it forward.
I love you always Grandma, and will someday meet you behind the sunset, my guardian angel forever.
Love Always,
Mima
