DENNIS CAMPTON Obituary

DENNIS CAMPTON Dr. Dennis G. Campton, 82, of Pahrump, passed away Feb. 18, 2014. Dr. Campton was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Navy and as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Marine Corps. After receiving his M.D. from Ohio State University in 1961, he began a 49-year career as an American Board of Family Practice Certified Physician, known for his outstanding work ethic, generosity, and dedication to his patients. After moving to Las Vegas in 1963, he opened his first private practice with partner Dr. Jack Cherry, while having privileges at Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital. From 1973-1978 he was director of the Emergency Room at Humana Sunrise Hospital, and after extensive post-graduate work in alcoholic studies throughout the early 1970's, was appointed medical advisor for Sunrise Hospital's Drug Abuse Center from 1978-1980, the first rehabilitative position of its kind in southern Nevada. In the late 1960's, he began servicing Pahrump as its sole country doctor, juggling practices between Las Vegas and Pahrump for the next 40 years. He opened Pahrump's Family and Emergency Medicine Center in 1988, and upon selling that practice in 1992, was medical director of a 10,000 square foot Family Practice facility at Summerlin's Pueblo Medical Center until 1995. From 1995-2001, he was Medical Director and practicing physician for Pahrump Medical Center, and then continued on in both those roles at the Desert Trails Medical Center from 2001-2004. He was instrumental in getting Pahrump's first hospital, Desert View, built in 2006, in collaboration with managing team Rural Health Group and benefactor Hollis Harris, and was named Nevada Rural Hospital Trustee of the Year in 2011. After retiring in 2000, he was coaxed back into medicine, practicing with the Mountain Valley Physician's Group on Desert View Hospital's campus from 2000-2010. Additionally, throughout his influential and respected medical career, Dr. Campton was medical director at DelMar Gardens and Evergreen Nursing Homes, prison doctor in Pahrump and Indian Springs, an upstanding member of the Clark County Medical Society, and the Del Webb Hotel doctor and friend to many famous actors, musicians, and hotel moguls. He acted as medical preceptor for Physicians' Assistants, as well as mentor for Pahrump's public health nurse, Marilyn Gallivan, and taught and certified EMT's in Pahrump. When Nathan Adelson Hospice first opened in Pahrump in 1999, he was appointed its first medical director, and, being one of the first to understand Hospice's goal of providing patients with dignity, comfort, and compassion, was honored for his efforts at its 10-year anniversary gala in 2009. Dr. Dennis Campton leaves behind a proud legacy of a lifetime devoted to healing, helping, and compassion. He will be sorely missed by his loving family, many friends, hundreds of grateful patients, and the entire Southern Nevada medical community that he dedicated his life to serving. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Sadie Campton-Miles; sisters, Mary Irene, Rose Annette, Dolores (Edward) Seaton, Betty (William) Tromm and Regina (James) Frank; and brother, Robert Campton. He was the beloved husband of Helene Campton; loving father of Christine (Patt Kearly) of Santa Cruz, Calif., Denise (Fred) Anderson of Grady, Ala., Tamara (James) Ruthers of Grove City, Ohio, Dennis (Kay) Campton of Redmond, Wash., and Alisha (Erik) Todd of Boca Raton, Fla.; brother of James (Toni) Campton of Las Vegas, Florence (Alan) Hinklin of Naples, Fla., Kenneth (Carla) Campton of Marion, Ohio, and Mary Pischner of Peoria, Ariz.; devoted grandfather of Kimberly La Chance of Montgomery, Ala., Dale Anderson and Keith Anderson of Grady, Ala., Nicholas Campton of Tucson, Ariz., Carley Campton of Phoenix, Sydney Campton and James Thor Campton of Redmond, Wash., and Jack Todd of Boca Raton; he is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Austin and Aiden LaChance of Montgomery; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Dear Doc.... It´s been many years since your passing... I was there with you till the end... I was with you from the nursing home till Desert View! You made me the person I am today, a good nurse, and a good person never a day goes by that I don´t talk to you , and ask you your opinion on life.... When you left this world, I wasn´t in a good place to be strong... but I know that you knew that... and that you knew I loved you, and that I was with you!!! I miss you... till we meet again

It was in the late 80's that ‘Dr. Denny' and I emotionally connected in a unique way. It was the week of Thanksgiving, and his sister Jeannie, was visiting his sister (and my wife) Florence and me in Wilmette, Illinois. Denny and Helene were in Chicago for a medical convention together with his brother Jim Campton and wife Toni, so Florence invited everyone to our home for Thanksgiving. Being a Chicago architect, I took Denny and Jim on a tour of Wilmette and interesting buildings in the area including the Baha'i Temple. The construction of the building began in 1920. The design was a mixture of many different architectural styles. The construction of the exterior of the building was completed in January 1943 and in 1947, Alfred Shaw, another Chicago architect, was hired to work on the interior detailing of the building. The temple was finally dedicated on May 2, 1953 (33 years after construction started) and in 1978 the House of Worship was added to the National Register of Historic Places. While visiting the temple, Jim, Denny and I viewed a movie of its construction and Dennis was so overcome by the historical significance of the temple that he talked of that day often over the years. It was at this time that Denny, Jim, Jeannie and Florence decided to organize a yearly Campton family gathering in a neutral location. Denny's brother, Kenny, selected Missouri as the place to meet for 2-3 days which we did for a few years. We also spent time together over many other Thanksgiving holidays at his sister Mary's home in Phoenix. Over these years Dennis and I continued to bond and we became quite close during his later life. I loved the man and I know he loved and respected me, as he did everyone he knew. The Hinklin family will miss Dennis, his humor & his love greatly. May he rest in peace forever. Alan and Florence Hinklin

I want to thank one of the greatest men I have known; not only for being my doctor through the years, but someone I trusted and believed in for many years. Seems strange I will never hear: Hey cut up can you help me with something at the clinic? again. You are sorely missed Campy...I know you are giving them hell in heaven. Deana Fromm and Family

Dear Helene and family
It has been a privilege for JoAnn and myself to know Doc and you. I first met Doc back in 1983 when we came to Pahrump. One of my best memories is of him wearing coveralls and taking the time from feeding the animal to see a sick patient on a Sunday at his house/office. We will miss him very much. He was a true gentlemen and a great doctor.

He was adored by everyone I knew both personally and professionally. He was a great teacher, wise friend and a beautiful loyal man. Oil am so happy my Arden is with him, they are young, well and playing golf. Love ya Cutie Pie yes I see that twinkle in your eye.

There will never be another Dr. Dennis, not only was he a wonderful doctor, he was an even more wonderful man with a great sense of humor. My most fun memory was Dennis participating in Nathan Adelson Hospice, Pahrump, Blue Butterfly Coffee House, a really fun fund raiser. Dennis played the part of, of all things, a doctor. The skit was hilarious and he was perfect in the role and enjoyed it thoroughly. I still smile when I remember that skit. God Blessed all of us with Dr. Dennis.
