Denton Cameron Obituary

ELWYN CAMERON Having completed an extraordinary 90 years of life, Denton Elwyn Cameron passed away peacefully April 29, 2016, at his home, in Las Vegas. He was born Dec. 29, 1925, to Benjamin Cameron Jr. and Camilla Effie Cannon, in St. George, Utah, the third youngest of 16 children and the last of his siblings to pass. Prior to graduating from high school, Elwyn enlisted and briefly served in the U.S. Navy. After receiving an honorable discharge due to medical reasons in October 1944, Elwyn returned to Utah, where he married Laurel Jackson of Toquerville, Utah, Nov. 25, 1944, in the St. George Temple. After their marriage, Elwyn attended Dixie Junior College at St. George, where he completed his pre-dental education and was elected student body president. After finishing school, Elwyn and Laurel moved to Henderson, where Elwyn worked in various enterprises while earning enough money to attend dental school. Elwyn was admitted to dental school at the University of Oregon, School of Dental Medicine, in 1953. After graduating in 1957, the family returned to Nevada. Elwyn and Laurel had four children together, Denton Jackson Cameron, Allen Jackson Cameron, Marilyn Cameron (nee Legere), and Lynnette Cameron (nee Swainston). After 37 years of marriage, Laurel Cameron passed away unexpectedly Oct. 26, 1981. Two years later, Nov. 11, 1983, Elwyn married Laquita Joy Choate in the St. George Temple. In addition to Laquita, Elwyn took on Laquita's eight children, Marcella, Kimberly, Scott, Christopher, Michael, Patrick, Jerry and Jill, expanding his family to a total of 12 children. Elwyn's love of the Gospel and his faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, manifested itself in a lifetime of service to others. As a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elwyn served in many callings, including perhaps his favorite, teaching early-morning seminary to high school students. From 1995 through 1996, Elwyn and Laquita served an 18-month mission in the New York, Rochester, Mission. Elwyn was preceded in death by his first wife, Laurel; his parents; all 15 of his siblings; and his stepdaughter, Marcella. Elwyn is survived by his wife, of 32 years, Laquita Cameron; 11 children; 41 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and too many friends to count. Viewing will be 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, May 6. Viewing again 9-9:40 a.m. Saturday, May 7, with memorial service following at 10 a.m., all at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 9011 Hillpointe Road, Las Vegas, NV 89134. Burial following at 3 p.m. (MDT) at the St. George City Cemetery, Tabernacle St. and 700 East, St. George.

I owe everything that I hold dear in life to this wonderful friend and mentor. While living with my family in the Las Vegas 6th ward, Elwyn fellow shipped them back into activity which led to a temple sealing. I became a dentist because of my admiration for this great man. My wife, my children and now my grandchildren are in my life because Dr. Cameron loved my parents and my brother and me and sincerely showed us a better way to live. I will forever be grateful for his life and example. My heartfelt sympathies to his family. Mark Callan

Dr. Cameron was kind and generous to my mother when, as a single mother, she had two children in the mission field at the same time...myself in Uruguay and my brother in the North Carolina Raleigh mission. My heart-felt love and condolences to the family. May God comfort you all as you gather together this coming weekend to honor an outstanding man.
