Dr. Doug was such a wonderful man. He was an amazing talent, who fortunately was in a position which allowed him to share his great abilities with the world! He was obviously a caring, loving, thoughtful family man, which is evident from the very fine people his children, David, Robert and Carolyn came to be, no doubt from his example. I was greatly honored that Dr. Doug chose me to be the narrator/emcee for 14 performances of the SNMAS. He was a great guy and will be missed by me, and everyone who knew him.

I'm saddened to hear of Dr. Peterson's passing. I was in his choirs at UNLV between 1982 & 1984, and then in the SN Musical Arts Society for several years following. I also went to classes with his children at UNLV for those same years 1982-1984. Las Vegas has lost a great humanitarian and maestro.

For anyone who knew Dr. Peterson, you have experienced his passion for music, for his family and for this crazy desert community where he ended up becoming a formative steward and champion of classical music for many of us. On a personal note, I will miss his smile, humor, enthusiasm and support more than I can express with words.
God Bless you and Rest In Peace, Doug.
We all send up our love today. Enjoy the harps!!!

Dr. Peterson was my choir director when l attended UNLV in 1977. Although l did not graduate from UNLV as l moved, l did come back to sing in African Sanctus two more times, and to sing in the Mikado and loved every second. It was a great experience to sing in the Musical Arts choir with Doug and his sons and daughter. They are all great people and Doug was a phenomenal teacher l learned so much from... l just thought he would live forever...and in more ways than one, he will... he will be missed terribly... Zoe

Dear Bob (BP-2) and family,
So very sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. You were fortunate to be able to share your passion for music together for so many years. I'm sure that he was proud that you were a part of his substantial achievements within the local music scene. He was an extraordinary man, who lived a long, extraordinary life. I'm sure that the choir in Heaven is already sounding better under his leadership and guidance.

Dr. Peterson was the best thing to happen to Nevada Southern/UNLV`s music department. I was in the University Chorus 1968 - 1969 and remember all he did for his students, the band and the University. He worked with the entertainers on The Strip, got funding for band uniforms, wrote an opus for the NV Centennial, and brought together all the talent in the region. He taught me so much and I enjoyed every minute singing. I will miss his energy and smile. Thank you Dr. Peterson for making my life full of song.

As a former UNLV student of Dr. Peterson's, I have the fondest memories of his kind manner and infinite patience with us. I was also a Jr. High student of Mrs. Peterson. May they both rest in peace and rise in glory. Condolences to all who loved him.

Doug not only loved his profession, but he loved people. Having had the privilege of being in his home once or twice I felt the warmth and a caring attitude he had for his children. Truly he was and example to all of us as he lived his life to enrich the lives of others through classical choral music.

I have sung in Doug's groups for over forty years. Because of Doug l have been exposed to some of the most powerful and beautiful music ever written, the kind that sometimes makes you tear-up even in rehersal. I will really miss him and I will continue to "take a break after a dotted quarter". We love you Doug.

I was fortunate enough to sing under Dr. Doug's leadership for on and off several years including one of the Andrea Bocelli concerts. I will always be so proud to have been a participating member of the impressive Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society. He was truly an inspirational master of music.

Dr. Doug, as we musicians used to call him, was one of the greatest gifts to Las Vegas. I had the pleasure of playing in his orchestra on numerous occasions and was always moved by his passion for choral music, and music in general. Las Vegas audiences were treated to outstanding choral concerts over the decades because of Dr. Peterson. No one could walk in his shoes.
Plato once said: The man who has music in his soul will be most in love with the loveliest.
Dr. Peterson gave us the beauty of music, the loveliest of the arts.
If he had it to do all over again, I am sure he would devote his life to music - the only unpunished rapture upon this earth.
I am grateful our musical paths crossed. I will never forget this humble man.

One great moment with Doug was a performance of Elijah in Hollywood. I assumed Doug was to be the guest conductor; but no, the resident choir director took the baton and
Doug took a seat among the tenor section; he was right behind me. Such a welcome surprise! He sang so wonderfully, I had no idea that was how a tenor should perform a libretto! What a treat! I soared singing and listening to Dr. Peterson. As a result, the Mendelssohn oratorio is my favorite. Thank you, Maestro, for the sweet lesson!! Rodney.

Dr. Doug Peterson was a serious student and disciple of the music he deeply loved. I had the pleasure of learning from Doug, working on performances by Doug's large music ensembles, and then working with him as a colleague at UNLV. His knowledge of religious oratorio was vast, and he had few peers in that regard. His community arts organization, the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society, has stood for more than five decades (1968). I've been trying to think of another like non-profit arts organization in Las Vegas that has survived as long as the SNMAS, and I can't. That certainly is Doug's legacy.

I cannot pretend to have known Dr. Peterson well, or as well as I should have known him, but I got to know him a bit, and he was a lovely man who did a lot for his profession and his community. My sympathies to his family and friends.

I was one of the fortunate people to work under the direction of Dr. Peterson at Community Lutheran. He was a gem, as was singing around his wife, Robert and Carolyn. He exposed us to the classical works...sometimes we struggled, but his patience allowed us to get it right, which he demanded. I have been a follower of his work in our city. I know he is probably conducting with another Iowa vocal teacher, Weston Noble. I can only imagine what they are providing for Heaven. With deepest love and respect, Jan Pinch
