HERMAN WILLIAMS Obituary

HERMAN WILLIAMS Herman "Herm" Williams, of Las Vegas, 90, passed away Jan. 21, 2014, at Nathan Adelson Hospice, surrounded by loving family. Born March 24, 1923, in Los Angeles, he graduated from North Hollywood High School, working briefly with Lockheed before joining the U.S. Navy, installing early radar on World War II aircraft. Following the war, he graduated from UC Santa Barbara and USC, becoming a dedicated and lifelong educator, teacher, mentor and pioneer administrator in vocational education in the Los Angeles County School District for 34 years. Herm's life was one of servant leadership, to his profession, church, community and country. Following retirement in 1984, this World War II veteran proudly served as a venue technology manager for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Also a dedicated Lion leader of 40 years, he served with the West Covina, Hawaii Kai and as Charter President of the Las Vegas Los Prados Lions Clubs upon moving to Las Vegas in 1989 with his loving wife, of 37 years, Audrey. He was also a spiritual leader, having served his church in many leadership positions at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Inglewood, Calif., Redeemer Lutheran in Honolulu, Lamb of God Lutheran, Las Vegas as a founding member, and at Faith Community Lutheran, Las Vegas. Herm dearly loved serving others as a Stephens Minister and trainer, soloist and choir member. An avid sports fan, he especially loved his Dodgers, USC Trojans and adopted UNLV Rebels; enjoyed hosting gatherings, cruising and traveling with family, friends and the Lions. Herm was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mary Rose (nee Fink) Williams; and sister, Grace Killen. He leaves behind his loving wife, Audrey; son, Bernie (Donna) Williams of Las Vegas, Barbara (Gary) Gehrkens of Tulare, Calif., and Kate (Ron) LeBlanc of Lake Oswego, Ore.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews around the country, including Kathy Wessman of Las Vegas, as well as many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Faith Community Lutheran Church (FCLC), 2700 S. Town Center Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89135. Reception will follow on the Faith campus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the FCLC Music program, Lions District 46 Student Speaker Foundation or Concordia University, Irvine, Calif. Williams Endowment Fund.

Herm ran the good race. I appreciated his Christian fellowship and was enriched by his life story, which itself was a testament to his devotion to his God and the mission assigned to him, a true disciple of Christ. I look forward to celebrating with him in the feast to come. Selah and Amen!
