James Longhurst Obituary

James Phillip Longhurst, 46, of Las Vegas, passed away Oct. 24, 2004, doing what he enjoyed, riding his motorcycle. Jim was born Aug. 3, 1958, in Las Vegas, and was a resident his whole life. Jim graduated in 1976 from Western High School, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1979 to 1983. He was a carpenter by trade and worked on many high rises throughout the valley. Jim's passion was the Nevada outdoors, an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved being chest deep in the water giggin frogs. Anything that tested him or pushed him to his limits was what he loved. He landed his final job at the Flamingo Hotel as an in house carpenter. Jim had a special way about him and touched a lot of people throughout his life. Those who have shook his hand or received that look from him always knew it meant something special. Jim served three years in the USMC, but lived his entire life as a U.S. Marine. He has been a proud member of the Greater Nevada Detachment Marine Corps League and it is there he met many great people that share a lot of the special qualities that make a U.S. Marine. He spent time in the Persian Gulf and Africa. Jimmy was never married and never had any children, but he had two nieces, Jessica and Ashley, that he loved more than life itself. Jessica said that uncle Jimmy went to Heaven to look after grandma, which is what he always did. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Longhurst; and father, Lyle Longhurst. He is survived by his two brothers, Ed Longhurst and John Longhurst. There will be a service for Jimmy at 12:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. A celebration of Jim's life will follow at 3 p.m. at the Leatherneck Club, located at 4360 Spring Mountain Road. Our family would like to thank everybody for their love and support in this tragic time. In memory of Jim, contributions can be made to the Marine Corps League in support of our troops in Iraq at 4360 W. Spring Mountain 368-1775. "We love you brother"
