James Schmidt Obituary

James Joseph Schmidt "Jim" passed away at home on July 5th, 2021. He was born at home in Farmingdale, NY on June 17, 1939, to parents Charles & Catherine Schmidt. He grew up with his brother Charles "Mickey", playing baseball and picking up a trombone. In high school under the direction of Marshall Brown he performed on the Today Show, at the Newport Jazz Festival and at the World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium.

Jim graduated from the Manhattan School of Music. Musical career included playing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Warren Covington, Buddy Morrow, Sal Salvador, the Tommy Dorsey band & 2 years in the U.S.Army Band playing troop graduations, sendoffs & returns. Lastly playing at the Tropicana hotel in 1968.

Carrying on in the Schmidt family tradition he went into the hardware business at Corbs Home Center. There he met Andrea "Andi", married, and started a family. He worked in various retail management positions until he retired.

Jim, a quiet, yet clever man, always had a quick-witted response to make you laugh. His lifelong interests included sports, traveling, and watching old war movies. He spent his retirement reading, doing crossword puzzles, and listening to jazz music. He loved dogs, Snoopy, his nightly ice cream and being "G-Paw" to Kiana, Trevor & Mallory.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Andi of forty years; son Joseph married to Larissa as well as three beautiful grandchildren.

At his request, no public service will be held. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Cancer Society. No services scheduled.

I met Jim and Andi in 1979 when the company I worked for purchased Corb´s. From the first time we met, Jim couldn´t have been more helpful during the transition of Corb´s into the new company. His knowledge of the business combined with a "do what it takes" attitude is a trait that I will always remember him for. Jim´s sense of humor and wit will also be remembered by all who knew him.
Jim was very humble about his many accomplishments in the music industry. On rare occasions he might mention his musical past but his main focus was always on the present and the future.
My working with him was limited to three years but the Las Vegas "crash course" he gave me was never forgotten.
They say that people come into your life for a reason, for a season or for a lifetime. Jim was part of my life for a reason and a season but will be remembered for a lifetime.
My sincere condolences to Andi, Joe and his family.
