Jay Bybee Obituary

JAY BYBEE Jay Sherman Bybee, 84, of Henderson, passed away Jan. 20, 2010. He was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Roy, Utah, to Sherman and Virginia Bybee. He was the oldest of four children and is survived by brothers, Ray Bybee of Brigham City, Utah, and Garry Bybee of Nyssa, Ore.; and sister, Colleen Froerer of Nyssa. Jay is also survived by his wife, Donella Bybee. They were married Sept. 9, 1947, and together, celebrated 62 years of marriage. Jay and Donella had two daughters, Pamela Bybee and Tamara Bybee-McGowan, of Henderson, who cherished their father. Jay was proudest of all of his two grandchildren, Cullen and Courtney McGowan, also of Henderson. In high school, Jay participated in every sport, including baseball, football, wrestling, boxing, track and basketball. After graduation from high school, Jay joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II, fighting in the Philippines and Japan. In addition to his infantry division, he was selected to run track for the Army. Jay was granted the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Philippine Liberation Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Asia/Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. After returning from the war, he worked with his father running Bybee Farms in Nyssa. Jay continued to own and operate Bybee Farms and also Fiesta Farms until he retired and moved to Henderson in 1993. Jay was a member of the Elks Lodge and on the Board of Trustees for a number of years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, which took him traveling to Alaska, Mexico, and all over the west. Each year Jay took his daughters and grandkids on an annual pheasant hunting trip to Nyssa. They hunted and shared fun times with his dearly loved brother, Garry and family. Jay enjoyed traveling with his beautiful wife, Donella, throughout Asia, Mexico, Columbia, and the U.S. He especially loved his recent trips to McCall, Idaho, every summer with his wife, daughters and grandkids. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, taking drives, boating and relaxing in the beauty of the Idaho wilderness. After moving to Henderson, his passion became his grandchildren and watching them in their many athletic and creative endeavors. He cheered his grandson, Cullen, on to see him win three state baseball championships with Bishop Gorman High School. In December, he watched his granddaughter, Courtney, perform as Peter Pan in the Bishop Gorman production. He was their greatest fan. Jay taught his daughters and grandkids how to fix things, play baseball, hunt, fish and many of life's important and difficult lessons. He was a great mentor to many and generous to a fault. Jay was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend whom was loved and cherished. He will be missed by all who had the honor to know him. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, with services following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. Interment will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the family for a memorial bench in his honor.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Jay Bybee. Jay was my cousin. His Mom Virginia Chamberlain Bybee and my Father Vance Chamberlain were siblings. Our Grandfather and Grandmother were Henry and Susan Chamberlain. While I haven't seen Jay in years since he moved from his home town of Nyssa, Oregon to Nevada, I fondly remember the trips his family including his Mom Virginia and Dad Sherman Bybee would make to visit us when I lived with my parents in Old North Ogden. Jays Grandmother Susan Chamberlain lived in the same house I grew up in. We lived in one side of the home and our Grandmother Chamberlain lived in the other side. Jay, his Brothers Gary and Ray and Sister Colleen would often come to pay us all a visit. In fact for a couple of years my family including my father Vance and my Mother Rubie Chamberlain lived and worked in Boise, Idaho and we often visited the Bybee farm in Nyssa when I was a small boy. My Brother Robert Chamberlain was born in Boise while my Father Vance worked at Wahlgreens Drug Store in Boise. Vance helped open the Wahlgreen Drug Store in Boise, Idaho when it was new. I have many fond memories of Jay and his family back in those days. I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to the Bybee Family for the loss of Jay. May God bless and comfort you at this time of your loss. BTW, Sherman (Jay's Father), Bybees Mother and Father are buried here in the Roy City Cemetary. Sherman Bybee, Jay's Father was raised and grew up here in Roy. Jay's Cousin Dennis Chamberlain, Roy, Utah

Dad - You were the best father anyone could ever have. You were always there for me, always loved me, taught me to stand up for my self, be kind to everyone, love the mountains and appreciate each day the morning brings. Forever your beautiful smile and the sound of your laughter is etched in my heart. Every minute of every day I will miss you. You are my hero and now you are my guardian angel. I will take care of mom and watch over our family. I am so grateful for all the many things you taught me to do. You were never to busy for me. I love you Dad and I will continue to be strong. Your love and respect for America, our soliders & our family will be carried on. Until we meet again -
Your loving daughter -
Pamela

My Uncle Jay was a special man. He served our country with great honor, built a wonderful family, grew a bountiful farm, loved his nation, cherished his family, and treated all of those in whom he came in contact- with kindness and respect. Even as a child, I felt that he cared for me and respected me. He was a great example who always helped his mother (my Grandma Bybee) in any way he could. He had a deep conviction for the good ole USA and was very proud of it. He had a sweet love for his grandchildren, and it was very evident in how he acted around them. I also thank him for being instrumental in getting the Bybee family where they are today. I will truly miss him.
Thumbs up Uncle Jay, I will always have you in my heart.

Love,
Misty Bybee Page

Aunt Donella, Pam, Tammy, I am sorry for our loss. The visit last summer was timely and meant to be. We enjoyed your company and hope that we can do this more in the future when you visit. There is only one Uncle Jay. I will miss him. The memories will never go away. He is still here in spirit.

One of my fondest memories of April 2008 (Easter) was having the honor of meeting Jay Bybee. We talked for hours about the past. He definitely had an interesting life and was blessed with a beautiful wife and family. May you all treasure the beautiful gifts he left behind... his wife Donella, two daughters Pamela and Tamara, and his wonderful grandchildren.

My Dad, My Hero you will be forever in my heart and will be missed always. You taught me so much and I have been blessed and honored to be your daughter. A daughter could not ask for a better role model, father or grandfather. CJ and Courtney were so grateful to have a grandfather who was always there and who loved them so. Dad I love you and will see you again. May you rest in peace. Your loving daughter, Tamara
