JOEL BERGMAN Obituary

JOEL BERGMAN Joel David Bergman, 80, of Las Vegas, passed away Aug. 24, 2016. He was born Aug. 20, 1936, to Harry and Edythe Bergman, in Los Angeles, and was a resident of Las Vegas for more than 25 years. Joel, a pioneering architect of modern casino design, passed away from natural causes, surrounded by his loving family. Those who worked with him respected him immensely and his projects throughout Las Vegas and the United States speak to his legacy. Joel earned a reputation for always speaking candidly and directly. His refusal to accept anything short of excellence in all aspects of his life was felt by everyone who met him. He was always ready to support a worthy cause or those in need both publicly and privately, but also incredibly generous with his time and talents while mentoring young architects. Privately, he was a husband, brother, father, grandfather and a friend to many. Joel is survived by his wife, Valentina; his sister, Diane; brother-in-law, Ray; his sons, Leonard, George, Valentin and Ivan; daughters, Alessandra and Lori; grandchildren, Daryl, Marissa, Nicolle, Lucas, Daniel and Remington; and nieces, Marnie and Stephanie. No services are scheduled. In lieu of flowers, our family requests that donations be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Southern Nevada.

My deepest condolences and sympathy to the Bergman family on Joel's passing. I knew Joel since meeting him in 1979 where we were working on the Golden Nugget-Atlantic City. I have so many memories of Joel over the years. Suffice it to say that he was one of a kind and will be missed.

I was sadden to hear of Mr. Bergman passing, I work in valet at the Tropicana and we took care of his car while he did some design work at the hotel, we became friends. He invited my wife and I to his house in Spanish Trails were he proceeded to basically give me some of his clothes off his back. That was Joel, although we only knew each other for a short time he gave and always giving of himself. The bible teaches that one shows love by serving others. Mr. Bergman truly love to serve, thus he loved without condition. He will be missed.

As a friend and then a student, Joel encouraged me to come work with him at Resorts International and then at Atlandia Design and Frunishings when he said to me ..."I will teach you what you need to know and how to do it" And he did. Through that experience I learned how to design and manage projects and made lifelong friends. The memories of our days in Atlantic City and the wonderful family we worked together with will always have Joel in the center. I am sorry to hear of his passing. For me, he will live forever. To all of Joel's family my sincere condolences. I worked with Joel and the whole Atlandia group on the Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Mirage, Treasure Island projects and have known Joel since 1979. He was such a great architect with his own style of making things happen. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. He will be missed. Please let me know if you have a memorial service I would very much like to attend and pay my respects.

Joel, you were a one of a kind. To me you were one of the sweetest men I have ever known Your bark was so much bigger than your bite. You were compassionate, loving and caring. I feel blessed to have known you and blessed to work with you during those many years at Atlandia. You always had bagels and lox for us. Rest in Peace my friend. You were loved and I will miss you.

Joel Bergman, who has died aged 80, was a leading exponent of Las Vegas casino resort architecture, although he became better known for his work with Steve Wynn's ATLANDIA Design & Furnishings in the early days of the Golden Nugget & Mirage Casino's.
He was the fountainhead for many design classics on the Las Vegas Strip. PAX ANIMAE.
