JOHAN COUMOU An amazing and promising young life sadly came to an end January 30, 2018, when Johan L. Coumou, 25, passed away peacefully in Reno, surrounded by his family, his fiance, Brooke, and her family, after a long and hard-fought battle with testicular cancer. Johan was born February 29, 1992, in Las Vegas. He attended Cornerstone Christian Academy and Faith Lutheran Junior/Senior High School. He was active in sports and played on the school's basketball, football and track and field teams. Johan still holds Faith Lutheran's all-time high-jump record. After graduating from high school, Johan attended the University of Nevada-Reno, where he majored in Criminal Justice. One of Johan's proudest accomplishments was graduating with his Bachelor's degree from UNR. After graduation, Johan planned to pursue a career in law enforcement, but he first wanted to follow his dream of serving his nation in the United States Coast Guard. It was during his medical exam for the Coast Guard that doctors detected an abnormality. For the next two years, Johan fought a valiant and courageous battle with this aggressive cancer. During his treatment, Johan continued to enjoy the outdoors, especially being out on the water. He loved paddle-boarding, kayaking and sailing. He also loved to hike, backpack and camp. He enjoyed exploring the vast open spaces in his beloved state of Nevada. He had a special fondness for Reno and its surrounding areas, and he was jokingly dubbed by his friends and family as the, "Ambassador of Reno." Johan also cherished his many visits to Kentucky, where he worked alongside his grandfather, Ray, on the family farm. Johan was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Gladys Boswell; and his paternal grandfather, Captain Bram Coumou. On his maternal side, Johan is survived by his mother, Susan; grandfather, Henry Ray (Mary) Boswell; aunt, Carolyn (William) Wetterer; uncle, Michael (Tammy) Boswell; and cousins, Laura, Claire, Henry and Will. On his paternal side, Johan is survived by his father, Frank; stepmother, Lucinda; and siblings, Olivia, Amelia, Emmelien and Alexander. He is survived by his grandmother, Johanna; uncles, Ernst (Paula) and Rene (Sapna); aunt, Marieke (Jeff) Doherty; and cousins, Kieran, Merryn, Mathilde, Hugo, Pieter and Nikolaas. Additionally, he is survived by his stepuncle, Edward (Jodi) Hamill; stepaunts, Pamela (Chuck) Prince and Stephanie Helfer; and stepcousins, Courtney, Stephanie, Jacqueline, David, Angelina, Alexa and Karlton. Johan is also survived by his high school sweetheart, fiance, and the love of his life, Brooke Badger, who was his devoted caregiver during his illness. Johan's family also wants to thank the Badger family, the many other friends and family members who offered their prayers and support during Johan's illness. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 24, at Faith Lutheran's Chapel and Performing Arts Center (CPAC), located at 2015 S. Hualapai Way, Las Vegas. Fellowship to follow the service.
