LUCILLE ROGERS Obituary

LUCILLE ROGERS Lucille Savage Rogers, affectionately known as Nana, passed away peacefully Aug. 26, 2012. She lived a full 96 years filled with a great deal of joy and accomplishment. Nana was born in Kentucky in 1916, she grew up there, went to college and married in her home state. She and her husband, Frank Rogers, and their son lived for several years in Costa Rica and Los Alamos, N.M., before moving to Las Vegas in 1953. Nana was a teacher in Los Alamos and continued teaching second grade in Las Vegas. She taught for nearly 35 years in the same classroom at the Paradise Elementary School on Tropicana Ave. In 2001, the Lucille Rogers Elementary School, near Tropicana Ave. and the 215, was named in her honor for the many years she had devoted to educating Las Vegas' youngsters. This school continues to receive high praise from the students' parents. Nana was known and respected for her ability to play the piano. Not only was she an accomplished musician, but she could also play by ear. It was such a treat to have her play for a small group, each person naming a different tune and she could immediately play the song. Nana was active in many educational groups while she was teaching, but one of her favorite pastimes was cooking. She loved making delicious Kentucky recipes and she especially enjoyed making cookies and sweets for parties and school events. She could bake 10 different cookie recipes in one evening. She also loved designing, decorating and taking care of her home. She had "a place for everything and everything in its place." Nana is survived by her son, Jim Rogers, owner of the Channel 3 television station; her three grandchildren, Suzanne, Kimberly and Perry; her eight great-grandchildren; as well as her dear cousin, Luellen Pyles of Maysville, Ky.; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be private and will be held at the end of September. "May she rest in peace."
