MARTY DREITZER Obituary

MARTY DREITZER Marty Dreitzer, a 12-year resident of Henderson, passed away May 23, 2014. He was 70 years old. Marty was a true "Renaissance Man" in every sense of that term. He was as loving as he was tough, as smart as he was wise, beloved by all who knew him. Born May 20, 1944, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Marty spent his formative years in Miami Beach, Fla., before joining the U.S. Navy at age 19. With an exceptional intellect and an uncommon affinity for languages, he spent three years in Japan during the Vietnam War era doing highly classified work deciphering code in defense of our country, which he loved so much. Marty would often say these were some of the proudest and best moments of his life. Upon returning stateside, Marty met the love of his life, Arlene, at a dance in Brooklyn, in 1966. She turned him down twice for a dance, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. Thus began a life partnership for the ages. They married in 1967. Marty and Arlene settled down in Brooklyn. They had two sons, Richard and Michael. He began a working life that would take him across a large spectrum of careers. From a role in early-era computer technology at Bache to food service in restaurants and hospitals to owning his own art supply store, and finally to working as a project manager in the transportation industry, Marty had a life worthy of the "Renaissance Man" title due to his many hobbies, talents and career choices. In addition to his role as adoring and faithful husband to Arlene, Marty relished his role as dad to his boys both of whom he would teach to become men. In every sense, Marty made sure they would develop into fine men and outstanding human beings. He equipped them for life's journey in an exemplary fashion, a rich legacy that they will pass along to their children. His unconditional love and support was given at all times, no matter what the circumstances. Marty loved being with family and friends, listening to music, sending morse code, operating a ham radio and completing the New York Times Crossword Puzzle in ink. Everything he did, he did the right way, his way. Well-reasoned. No shortcuts. No excuses. He lived well. He loved his family, his close friends and his country deeply. In addition to his wife, Arlene Dreitzer, Marty is survived by his eldest son, Rich Dreitzer, and his wife, Lisa; as well as his youngest son, Mike Dreitzer, and his wife, Wendy; three grandchildren, Sam, Charlie and Julia; his sisters-in-law, Michele Topol, Marsha Topol and Linda Topol; his brother-in-law, Robert Topol; as well as a host of additional family and friends. Marty was one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all. Services will be private at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.

Marty and i used to belt out You Dont Have to Call Me Darlin while everyone else talked. It was great fun.

I got a little hobbie job of broadcasting on a new network and played You Dont Have to Call Me Darlin this week not knowing it was his birthday. Coincidence?

Marty, I'm so glad I had the honor of knowing you. Your smile was contagious. Your love for family and friends was unmeasurable. You always made me feel welcome in your home and I always looked forward to our visits. My favorite memory was when we went to listen to "The Beatles" impersonators. You loved that music and sung along with every song. Although my heart is heavy with sadness, it will always hold a special place in it for you. Rest in peace my dear Marty.

I loved Marty very much, as did everyone who knew him. There was no pretense about Marty; he was totally genuine. He loved his family with all his heart. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. My heart goes out to his immediate family at this sad time of celebrating a life well-lived. We'll miss you Marty.
