PETER KEMPF Obituary

LTGN PETER KEMPF U.S. Air Force, Retired Lieutenant General (retired) Peter T. Kempf passed away June 15, 2012, after a six-year battle with melanoma. General Kempf was born July 9, 1936, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Evelyn and Hank Kempf, and was raised in New Jersey and California. He graduated from Whittier High School and attended two years at Whittier College, where he played football under Coach George Allen. In 1958, he entered the U.S. Air Force through the Aviation Cadet program, starting out as a navigator in C-130s. He subsequently attended pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona, and graduated as the number one student in his class. He earned his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Nebraska in 1964. His career in the U.S. Air Force spanned 33 years and he had more than 6,000 flying hours in C-130s, VC-135s, O-1s, F-4s, F-111s, F-15s, F-16s, and A-10s. While he flew a wide variety of aircraft he was a fighter pilot to the core and was a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Fighter Weapons School at Nellis AFB. He was once asked what his favorite airplane was. His response was, "The F-15, F-16 and A-10 were a lot of fun to fly, but I carried a whole lot of lead back from North Vietnam in F-4s and they never let me down." He eventually returned to Nellis as the Tactical Fighter Weapons Center Commander from 1985 until 1988. His career culminated in his assignment as the Commander of 12th Air Force, where he was the architect and director of the air war for Operation Just Cause, the US invasion of Panama, in December 1989. In 1990, he retired on an athletic scholarship to Henderson, where he was very active riding his bike, skiing and playing competitive racquetball at the national level. He is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Louise; his daughter, Laura; his son, Steven; his daughter-in-law, Marshon; and his granddaughters, Taylor and Rachel. The family is extremely grateful to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, for all of their care and expertise during his long battle with melanoma, and he gave them great credit for surviving as long as he did. No memorial service will be held. His remains will be cremated and spread by his family in a private ceremony. Donations can be made in his name to either the MD Anderson Cancer Center or the Wounded Warrior Project. The University of Texas M. D. I worked for then Colonel Kempf at Luke AFB, Az in the late 1970's. I was a second Lt. I respected him and I always knew that his first priority was the mission of the USAF. He was a serious, no nonsense, hard charging professional officer who took on the most difficult jobs that the Air Force had. I would have followed him anywhere. His leadership style was straight ahead full speed get it done and I appreciated him for that. He treated me very well and always took time to get my opinion. It was a privilege General Kempf! God Speed!

Dear Kempf family,
I had the great opportunity to know Pete when I was at Club Sport. He shared some of his past accomplishments with me while I worked out on the treadmil. Sometimes he would touch on his battle with melanoma. He was so strong and seemingly at peace with his illness. He told me one day that he had written his book. After reading his bio, his book was even bigger than he let on. What an amazing man. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

"We toast our hearty comrades who have fallen from the skies, and were caught by God's own hand to be with him on high, to dwell among the soaring clouds they have known so well before, from victory roll to tail chase at heaven's very door.
And as we fly among them there, we are sure to heart their plea:

Take care my friend, watch your six and do one more roll for me."

I was a young Airman at Nellis AFB and I remember LtGen Kempf well. Although I only had one stripe, he treated me well and respected my opinion. I have always looked up to him for that. I will always remember him as a great leader and a great man.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Kempf family. I am proud to say I knew and worked for General Kempf while he was at Nellis AFB. He and I had many excitng discussions relating to our personal experiences in South Vietnam. I trusted him completly and respected him more than life itself. As a leader he was supportive and always offered his assistance. I salute you Gen Kempf. Thank you for your service to our great nation.

Never forget the time he camed to the house to borrow a ladder at 6am for Steve and Marshon. I was up and answered the door. He explained his purpose, what he needed, and he was ready to go. I didn't have a ladder then, but I stated my neighbors across the street do. He said,"think their up?" I said, "well." As he turned and looked at the neighbors house, I was smiling and he turn at me, saw my smile, he smiled and said, "ya, there up." He knew he was in the clear from my smile and marched right up there, knock on their door, and got the ladder. Very glad to have met him when the Kempfs lived next to us!
